Hello, I'm Jennifer! I graduated magna cum laude from Boston College Graduate School of Social Work with a Master's degree in Clinical Social Work. I also have a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in Human Services and a concentration in Psychology, as well as a dual minor in Gender Studies and Art Therapy. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Massachusetts with 15 years of professional social work experience. I also have 2 years of experience as an elementary school teaching assistant, and 3 years of experience tutoring elementary school students who are on individual education plans (IEP). Furthermore, I have one year of experience teaching graduate students, abroad and in the USA, international social work with a focus on HIV/AIDS education in Uganda, Africa.
As a social worker, I love connecting with people and helping others is my passion. I love teaching and tutoring because I truly enjoy being part of the learning process. It's extremely rewarding to help my students fully grasp new concepts and then be able to apply their knowledge to their studies with confidence!
I want all of my students to be successful in school and enjoy learning. Therefore, I am always open to new suggestions and resources that my students, teachers or parents may want to provide. I make my lesson plans interactive, fun and creative with a focus on mastering challenging material. I employ the use of props, games, online educational resources and platforms. I also use educational handouts designed with specific techniques for maximizing learning based on style, breaking large assignments into smaller more manageable tasks, and teaching effective study, time management and organizational skills.
For students with IEPs, upon request, I will provide the following additional services:
1) Communication with teachers via email or phone for clarification on assignments, as needed
2) Provide recommendations to teachers for special accommodations, based on learning style
3) Advocate for students, when appropriate, if the learning needs of the student are not being met in accordance with the students IEP
4) Provide written progress notes and when appropriate, recommendations to the school to aid in IEP meetings
My subject areas of expertise include college level clinical social work with all populations, psychology, sociology, death and dying, developmental stages, ethics, philosophy, english grammar and writing, reading, phonetics, effective proofreading, test taking strategies, executive function skills and organization.
My education and professional experience, both nationally and internationally, have given the skill set to be an effective teacher/tutor for all age groups. The knowledge I gained teaching and tutoring elementary students gives me the proficiency to teach all subject areas at an elementary level. I am also very knowledgeable about the IEP process in the state of Massachusetts and can provide related resources. Moreover, I am skilled at working with students who have learning disabilities and are on an IEP.
I believe that everyone has their own unique learning style and that information is learned more effectively and efficiently when employing teaching methods that support the students learning style. What makes my services unique is that I offer a FREE LEARNING ASSESSMENT, as part of the first tutoring session. I do this in order to structure the lessons to meet the needs of each individual's learning style, therefore maximizing the student's ability to comprehend, apply and retain learned material.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or to schedule a lesson. I look forward to speaking with you!
