About Daniel

I am retired after 30 years in the IT field, as a computer programmer and Oracle database administrator. I have taught some college computer classes for Microsoft Office products and Database Administration.

Currently, I volunteer as a GED Math instructor in South Boston, along with performing computer projects for the school. It is a diverse population, both culturally and by student age. Many of the students have low confidence in math, so I strive to help them get comfortable with lots of examples and encouragement.

I graduated from Stonehill College with as a mathematics major in 1976. For over four years, I worked (and lived) with Developmentally Delayed Adults in Somerville, Mass. in a residential setting.

I look forward to meeting potential students to see if it is a good fit. Thank you and good luck.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

I was a computer programmer for over ten years in both COBOL and CICS mainframe environments. Since then I have written numerous shell scripts in Linux/Unix along with Batch file script for Windows as an Oracle DBA. I've also modified/clones programs in C+ and Java, but not my strong suit. I'm very familiar with loop programming, error checking/restartability, and text manipulation.

Linux

As an Oracle DBA, I maintained databases on Linux and Unix platforms for 16 years. I'm very familiar with scripting in order to schedule maintenance jobs via schedulers such as Autosys or Cron. These scripts included trapping for error codes (using grep) and being step-restartable. I am very comfortable with the “vi” editor. I’ve recently used virtual machine software from VMWare to simulate a Linux machine on my Windows laptop.

Microsoft Windows

I have used Microsoft Windows for over twenty years. I have written and maintained numerous batch file scripts and used the Windows Scheduler to run them on a regular basis. I have used many of the Windows System Tools like Disk Defragmenter, System Restore, and cautiously used the RegEdit. I have installed many software tools and set up local wireless systems.

Oracle

I was an Oracle DBA for 16 years, starting with Oracle 7 up to Oracle 10. I used RMAN and home-grown Linux scripts to take backups, wrote procedures for restore and recovery situations. I used OEM, SQLDeveloper, and other 3rd Party tools to create tables, indexes and other schema objects. My regular duties included testing SQL code for full table scans, Cartesian products and other costly functions.

Fantastic tutor. — Daniel was an excellent tutor. He responded to me right away and we were able to meet in the next few days. He was patient with me and came very well prepared for what I needed to learn. If I need more tutoring, I would definitely hire him again. He was amazing. ...
