I'm originally from Fort Collins, Colorado, and moved to the Boston area for graduate school. I was home schooled as a child but started taking classes at the local community college when I was still in middle school and had finished my first two years of college work by the time I was 17. I then went on to dance ballet full-time for two years before returning home and finishing my BA at Colorado State University, graduating summa cum laude before starting graduate work at Tufts University. I received my PhD in English literature from Tufts in August of 2011 and currently combine my teaching work with tutoring.
I have been a professional tutor and a college writing teacher since 2005, working at Tufts, Bentley, Suffolk, CSU-Global, Signet Education, and with private clients. At Tufts I tutored first-year writing at the Academic Resource Center, working with students to help them improve the fundamentals of the writing craft. Over the years I have seen literally hundreds of papers at every part of the writing process, from brainstorming to final polishing. I have built ongoing relationships with dozens of students, some of whom came to see me every week through the better part of their freshman year of college because they trusted that I knew how to help them improve their writing consistently. In my private tutoring I have clients that have worked with for multiple consecutive years. I love tutoring because it gives me an opportunity to build one-on-one relationships with students and because it forces me to continue learning new things and trying new techniques.
I have also helped students apply for colleges, internships, and study abroad programs. I have extensive experience working with clients whose families do not speak English in the home, helping them improve their vocabulary, conversation skills, reading comprehension, and writing. I also have experience working with children with ADD/ADHD and enjoy the challenges of organizational and executive functioning coaching. I am an excellent user of Dragon dictation software and can help train students in its use if they need access to alternate tools in order to succeed academically.
In all of my work my goal is to help the student develop greater interest in the subject they are studying and writing about so that they internalize the material on a personal level. I believe firmly in student-led learning and in the potential of all students to succeed and thrive. I'm originally from Fort Collins, Colorado, and moved to the Boston area for graduate school. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have several years of experience tutoring students with ADD/ADHD in study skills, time management methods, and specific academic subjects such as writing, reading, vocabulary, and history. I excel at working with students to find the strategies that will work best for their particular learning style and needs. I stay on top of current research about how to best serve these students and am continually looking to find new approaches to serve my clients.
I have a BA (summa cum laude), a Masters, and a PhD in English language and literature. I have taught English for many years at the college level and can speak knowledgeably about everything from Beowulf to the most recent Young Adult literature and just about everything in between. As an English tutor, I help students learn how to connect the texts they read in school to real world events and historical trends. I excel in teaching close reading skills, rhetorical analysis, and active reading practices.
As a study skills tutor I help students understand how to break large complex tasks down into small, discrete components. I teach them how to use planners and calendars and follow up with them to make sure that they are using the tools I've given them and creating new habits that lead to academic success. I emphasize research skills, brainstorming techniques, and how to recognize when they need to try a new way of doing something. Most importantly I teach them to ask questions about the work so that even the most boring homework assignments can become engaging and interesting to them.
I have nearly a decade of experience teaching and tutoring writing skills at all levels, from elementary school to graduate school. I focus on helping students understand the many deliberate choices that go into writing well, breaking the process down into its component parts to demystify what happens when we put words on paper.
