Haverford College (Mathematics)
Boston University (Master's)
I completed my Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Mathematics Education from Boston University in 2010. I have Massachusetts licensure to teach middle and high school mathematics, and I am currently employed teaching Geometry, and Precalculus on the North Shore. I've been tutoring and teaching (mostly math) for the last ten years, and I feel my teaching experience helps me be a better tutor, while my tutoring experiences help me be a better teacher - it's a win-win situation for everyone!
Having witnessed “learned helplessness” and math phobias, both in school settings and beyond, I strive to help students to develop positive attitudes regarding mathematics. Mathematics is a stepping stone, not just a frustrating high school class. I use my energy and enthusiasm to promote positivity and active learning, helping all students access the mathematics curriculum. I truly believe all students can and will succeed in mathematics, learning skills which will help them in their everyday lives and open doors to additional career possibilities. My former students have said that I have helped them both increase their grades and their interest/enjoyment in Mathematics, and I hope to help you or your son/daughter to do the same! Trigonometry was getting harder and Blythe did a great job making it clear and understandable while making the time fun.
Blythe met all our expectations in that she was well informed on the subject matter, able to work effectively with the student, personable, timely, and a good communicator regarding the meeting setup. We plan to work with Blythe on a case-by-case basis to troubleshoot challenging pre-calc assignments. We are grateful that we've met and now have an established relationship for a go-to expert. Thanks Blythe!
We chose Blythe because we want our girl to build confidence in her ability to master math. So far, Blythe has met our expectations and our girl seems more empowered after meeting with her. Thanks!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
