About Laura

I believe that the most important part of teaching is listening. I encourage my students to communicate their questions and concerns, and the student guides the process. My teaching experience ranges from early childhood music to SAT Preparation and the variety of my background has given me a strong "tool kit" from which to teach. I enjoy teaching one-on-one because it gives me the opportunity to work directly with a person's individual needs.

I am fortunate enough to have studied theater intensively, and as a result I have developed a teaching style that is both dynamic and intuitive. I have also studied Developmental Psychology and Drama as Education, and after college spent several years substitute teaching in public school systems. In that time I taught in almost every subject offered, including six weeks in a high school English classroom. I also served as an elementary classroom teacher, music and art specialist, and even a physical education instructor.

The most important thing I have learned in my years of teaching is that the student is the key element in the learning process. I tailor my teaching to the student, their age, their interests and their background, and I thoroughly enjoy being a part of the process.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have several years of experience as a substitute at all grade levels, so I have encountered just about every subject and level out there! My approach to teaching elementary-age students is very hands-on, and I take advantage of each student's unique learning style. I use visuals, manipulatives and even movement activities to help students understand their subject. I believe that every child can learn if the subject is presented in an engaging way, taught in a manner with which the student is comfortable. Contact me to see if I would be a match for your child!

Piano

I began learning piano at age five, and have been playing ever since! I love music and believe that instilling that lifelong love is the first duty of a music teacher. I believe in using students' interests to guide instruction and in using musical growth to build confidence. Each new skill learned and technique mastered helps a student feel better about his or her abilities and helps him or her connect to the instrument.

I like to say that I taught my first piano lesson at age six - teaching my three year old brother how to play "Love Somebody" - and although the "lessons" were short lived, I hope I still teach with that same sense of joy and play! I began teaching music again as a college student and love watching my students grow and learn. I would love to share the joy of music with you or your child!

Prealgebra

I have tutored several students in pre-algebra, from middle school through high school. I focus on developing an understanding of each individual topic, while outlining a method for approaching problems that students can to other subjects as well.
