About Isobel

Ever since I was little a kid playing pretend "school" with my friends, I have loved teaching. Education and teaching runs in my blood since my grandmother was an elementary math teacher and my mom is a high school English teacher. Growing up around teachers, being involved with the teachers in my mom's English department, and having amazing teachers all throughout my educational career has inspired a love helping others learn.

In high school I had the privilege of tutoring English/grammar/writing/essay editing in my school's writing center as part of my Advanced Writing Seminar class. I really found a love of editing papers and helping students strengthen their English skills. Even before working in the writing center, I would always edit my friend's papers for class and they would edit mine. I found peer tutoring to be incredibly beneficial and a way for me to learn more about English myself.

I also work as a tutor in my Astronomy department at Mount Holyoke college. I help facilitate "help sessions" for Astronomy 100 students. So, not only do I have experience tutoring for English, but also for science and math. The diversity between the subjects I have tutored helps me be a well-rounded tutor.

Studying in college myself also helps provide insight on student challenges. My goal is to help students achieve success without overwhelming them. Being in school myself, I understand time management and workload for students and how to properly help tutor without giving too much work.

I am usually available mostly on Tuesdays-Sunday, but am willing to work with a student to find the best time for both of us. I prefer online tutoring, as it is both easier for I and the student to hop online, but I am willing to travel to a student. My base rate for online is $40 and in person is $75. Contact me for details!

Algebra is the basis and building block for almost all math. As an astronomy major I need to be extremely comfortable with upper level calculus, and without knowing algebra inside and out, there is no way I would be able to do upper level math. Thus, I am exceedingly comfortable with algebra and fully understand the entire subject.

English is one of my passions. Not only have I worked as an English tutor, but loving the subject improves my tutoring and helps me instill knowledge, and hopefully some love, of the subject into students. I am also well versed in literature, and can help students understand difficult texts and the underlying context of themes and subjects. Having written over 50 pages in my AP Lit class alone, I am also well versed in writing literary analysis papers and can help any student improve their writing.

For my Girl Scout Gold Award I conducted an after-school learning program for elementary students called Reader's Theater. It helped students understand context, themes, plot devices, and other important features of literature. However, teaching these elementary students helped me understand how best to approach the subjects in an comprehensive manner which they can understand. I have experience with elementary students and how to help them develop skills they will need for the rest of their education.

I look forward to meeting you and helping further your educational career!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taken many different hard math and physics classes in high school and college. Being an astrophysics major I need to be able to do advanced math. However, all math included algebra. Almost all equations and formulas I do require algebra, so I have in-depth knowledge in the subject.

Algebra 2

As an astronomy major I use upper level math and physics everyday. Those skills would be impossible without algebra, thus, I am exceedingly comfortable with algebra and fully understand the entire subject.
