About Christine

Regarding Academic Tutoring:

Hello! I am new to tutoring (outside of family and friends), but excited about helping students discover their full potential. I have lots of experience tutoring my teen son and a few of his friends, who have challenges with math, writing and/or organizational skills. Teachers don't have the time or resources to individualize instruction for each student, so those who struggle a bit can fall behind. If that happens and it's not addressed, it can become harder each year to catch up - which often takes a toll on a student's confidence and motivation to work hard.

I work with the student and parents to develop specific goals for tutoring, and a plan to achieve them. I pay close attention to finding the right methods and tools for your child to retain what they learn and generalize to non-memorized problem-solving. I develop a good working relationship with the student and his/her family, checking in regularly to discuss progress and modify my tutoring approach as needed. I am always open to suggested changes from the student or parent.

As far as credentials for academic tutoring, I have a master's degree in applied psychology, and have always had strong skills in writing and math. I am currently studying for the SAT with a goal of scoring above 700 on each section - so I am particularly up to date on high school math and language topics. For study skills, I have done lots of research on study skills instruction and tools for my son, and would love to apply that knowledge to help your student make new strides. Given my son's learning disabilities, I have also learned that patience is critical to successful tutoring!

Regarding Career Tutoring/Advising:

As a Human Resources professional for over 20 years, I have had extensive experience in the full spectrum of career development services. I have insight into what employers want due to having worked as a Recruiter, trained supervisors in interviewing skills, and as a member of interview panels for hundreds of hires. I worked for two years at a small company specializing in resumes, cover letters, online profiles, career portfolios and biographies. Relative to career planning, I have coached many individual employees in career development, and trained hundreds of managers in career development best practices. Lastly, I am very knowledgeable about a variety of job hunting strategies including networking, job sites, internships, etc. No matter the career development phase, I would be happy to work with you to achieve clarity about what you want, and work with you to achieve your career goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have ADD as does my son, so I have lots of experience finding solutions to ADD/ADHD issues that interfere with studying, assignment completion and test taking. Each student has a different profile of strengths and weaknesses - so I help identify the most significant ADHD-related barriers and work with the student to address them.

For example, for ACTIVATION, difficulty getting started on homework unless strongly prodded, I explore motivation and rewards, and whether it's best to start right after school or allow a period of decompression.

For FOCUS, difficulty maintaining attention to complete assignments due to discouragement, or being distracted by the environment, I explore a quiet workspace, disabling distracting technology, and brief breaks, as needed, to aid concentration.

For SELF-CARE, diet and exercise habits that may interfere with school work such as hunger, lack of hydration, or sugar crashes, I encourage exercise and a healthy snack before tackling homework. I am knowledgeable of the affects of anxiety and depression on academics, so can be guided by whatever your family physician may recommend that is relevant to our tutoring sessions.

To aid RETENTION, if this is an issue, I try different approaches such as, asking open-ended questions to confirm understanding, creating strategy cards the student can reference when trying to use the skill later, and providing mixed practice over long periods.

For EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING, I work with the student to identify top-priority organizational and study skills goals to achieve. Or I can support achievement of executive functioning and academic goals already identified in a student's IEP.

Lastly, I have a master's degree in Applied Psychology and am a career Human Resources Manager. I have managed training organizations and done extensive training and coaching of employees. Although new to tutoring students outside my family and close friends, I've gained a lot of knowledge relevant to tutoring students with ADD/ADHD, while supporting my son over his last 11 years in school!

Career Development

I am a human resources professional with experience across the full spectrum of career development services. I've been a recruiter and trained hirers in interviewing skills (so I know what hirers look for in resumes and interviews). I worked for a career services company where I developed resumes and coaching clients on career search techniques. I have developed career ladders and job descriptions for many job families, so am very familiar with the kinds of jobs available for many majors - e,g. for a communications degree, entry-level job possibilities exist in: marketing, marketing communications, event planning, public relations, and employee communications.
