I have taught math, reading, writing, and study strategies to students in small group settings and have also worked as a reading specialist, focusing on development of phonics understanding, fluency, and comprehension.

Over the last few years I have started my own business doing private tutoring for students looking to improve their reading, writing, math, or organizational skills. I also work with students who need editing or test-taking support. I currently tutor three days per week and am home with my toddler the other part time. My students currently range in age from seven to 65, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with students of such diverse ages and backgrounds.

Tailoring lessons to individual student learning styles and needs is my favorite part of 1:1 tutoring. My approach is to use various materials and try to relate the material to the student. I also value the importance of teaching learning strategies that can be applied across curriculum, so that students can have a toolbox of these strategies to help organize their thinking.

I feel follow through with families is important and like to have an open communication system between sessions. I am also willing to communicate with students' teachers to ensure we are on the same page and to best reinforce or supplement was is happening at school.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with you and hope to hear from you!

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

My background in teaching special education and reading, as well as in private tutoring includes working with many elementary school aged students. I have taught reading, math, and science to K-6 students. I have also worked with them on a variety of study skills and organizational skills. I enjoy working with this age group and making instruction and materials hands-on and engaging in order to keep the students involved and interested.
Phonics,

Phonics

Over the last several years I have enjoyed teaching reading to school-aged students, as well as college and adult students as a reading specialist and as a private tutor. I have been trained in the Wilson Reading Program, which is a sequential multi-sensory based program that can be utilized for all ages. I try to stay updated and use best practices when it comes to phonics or any reading instruction.
Reading,

Reading

I am a certified special education teacher and have experience teaching students with reading and language disabilities, both as a special education teacher and as a reading specialist. I have training in specific programs, including Wilson Reading/Spelling for decoding and encoding, as well as Linda Mood Bell's Visualizing and Verbalizing for reading comprehension. My approach is to do a basic assessment to find where a student's levels are in the areas of phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and/or comprehension, and then to choose a learning plan that fits appropriately into the student's learning needs and learning style.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

My background and experience in special education has given me plenty of opportunity to work with students on study skills. I have taught small groups strategies on how to study, such as create flash cards, make study guides, highlight important information, etc, and how to glean the most important information from a text or notes. We have also worked on time management with studying. I personally think study skills is the most important foundation in academic success, and I try to incorporate study skills, even when teaching reading, math, or other content area. It is how to access the material.

SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

In my teaching and tutoring experience I have worked with many students on organizing and developing paragraphs, essays, and compositions for both school and formal tests, such as the MTEL and MCAS. Sometimes writing can be stressful because we all want to write our perfect piece on the first attempt. I try to work with students at breaking down the task into steps, developing thoughts, creating a structure, and then organizing them in a cohesive manner.
