About Patricia

My name is Patricia, and I have worked with children in a variety of educational settings throughout my career. I have been tutoring students for the last three years in all elementary and middle school subjects and have also tutored college students in writing. I genuinely love working with students! At this time, I am seeking students who are in need of tutoring this summer.

I have experience as an elementary school teacher, as a preschool teacher, and as a director of an after school program. Currently I coach and train educators working with children in after school programs and early childhood settings. I am also a parent of a seventeen year old who has learning challenges. I know firsthand how much learning challenges can impact a child's love for learning and make the school day and time spent on homework seem very long. One of the reasons I am interested in tutoring is my desire to help children realize that they can learn, even if they do not yet have confidence in themselves as learners.

At times, I have discovered that the child has not yet mastered prior concepts that would enable him or her to complete the assigned homework. In that case, I will help the child over a period of weeks or months to learn those earlier skills. Since children all have different areas of strength, identifying those and using them to help build up areas of difficulty can be helpful. Similarly, making a connection between the subject being studied and a child's own interests can provide motivation for a child to become more engaged in a subject. It is important to use encouraging responses such as "You are getting close" or "You took your time and you got it!" Responses like these create an environment in which children will feel confident enough to try tasks of increasing difficulty.

I would welcome the opportunity to work with your child. As I stated above, if you feel your child would benefit from tutoring over the summer, I am accepting summer students. I also would be happy to provide support to older students in high school or college who would like help with writing or study skills. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a certified (Grades 1-6) elementary school teacher, and I taught first grade for one year. Following that year, I taught a gifted and talented program for grades 1-6 in two schools for four years and covered all curriculum areas. I have a Master's in Education, and in my current role as quality coach to early childhood and after school teachers have both given and received much training on providing learning experiences for children. As I have moved into the early education and care field in Massachusetts, I have allowed my certification to lapse, but I am certified to deliver particular trainings to adults.

I have two years of experience tutoring children in all elementary school subjects, and I have been successful in helping my students. I have worked for two years with a student with special needs referred by another tutoring company who is now in grade 7, supporting him in all his subjects.

When I tutor, I work hard to observe how each student's learning challenges impact their understanding of a subject and tailor my tutoring support to his or her needs. I am confident that I would continue to provide high quality tutoring to children in elementary school.

Study Skills

I successfully completed a BA in psychology as well as an M.Ed in education and developed strong personal study skills completing my education. I have been tutoring children, as well as some college students, for the past three years. My current students' grade levels range from grade 2 through grade 8.

In supporting students with study skills, some of my methods are to assist students with overall comprehension of the material, identification of key concepts, the creation of outlines, and the use of flash cards. I also individualize my methods for each student, as each student learns differently.

Special rapport with student.

My student is very responsive to her tutoring style. He is developing confidence in his abilities, largely due to Ms M.'s teaching skills. Wonderful progress in creating excitement in the learning process. It's so nice to see a grinning student enjoying his lessons
