I am a Massachusetts licensed teacher, and I have taught Math & Computer Science for the past 17 years working in the Sudbury and Newton public school districts. In addition I have tutored many students preparing for the SSAT, SAT, ACT and GRE exams by helping them improve their score and finding their best possible test strategy. My undergraduate degree is in Math & Computer Science and I have a master's degree in education from Harvard.

I am passionate about learning! When a student tells me that they "hate" a subject I know it is because they do not understand the concepts and are frustrated. "This is how I feel about bowling," I tell my students, "because I am miserable at it." My job is to find the missing links in each student's educational background and fill in all the missing pieces. I prepare for my lessons in advance using different teaching techniques tailored to each student's individual needs. As a former software engineer I use technology to enhance learning. My goal is for my students to gain confidence in their skills and be successful in their classes. My greatest reward is the smile I receive when a student "gets it". I tell my students that if they can learn math then maybe I can learn to bowl.

I have raised three children of my own and understand the needs of my students from a parents point of view. During my son's junior year in high school he became very ill and missed 3 months of school. When he fell behind in Precalculus, I hired a tutor for him. Watching him work with the tutor as he blossomed and succeeded was very moving. My goal is to be an inspiration for you as well!

I know that it is hard to call a stranger on the phone or via internet to get help for yourself or child. Please feel free to email me so that we can set up an interview.

I wish you success in your studies!

I have tutored many students preparing for the GRE's. I took the GRE exam myself and scored 800 on the math section and 740 verbal. I work with students in the three areas that the GRE test: quantitative, verbal and writing. I give students practice tests and analyze their areas of weakness as well as their test taking practices. I then prepare lessons to improve their knowledge and test taking strategies. I continue to provided timed practice tests to assess progress. As the exam approaches I work with each student to plan their specific test strategy.

Java

Before I became a high school teacher I was a Software Engineer with Digital Equipment Corporation for over 10 years. In my job I used many computer languages (COBOL, FORTRAN, ASSEMBLER, C, C++, Pascal, Lisp and Java). Java is distinct as it is an object-oriented language and currently the language used on the AP Computer Science test. I start students with an introduction to basic Java syntax followed by data structures (primitive, arrays, lists and classes). Next we work on controlling the flow of the program through the use of loops and methods. Then we discuss searching and sorting algorithms and learn how to analyze them for efficiency. If a student is taking AP Computer Science I teach them the current Case Study and have students work through problems that modify the case study.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I am a Massachusetts licensed high school Math & Computer Science teacher. I have taught all high school math subjects for the past 16+ years and have tutored many students as well. Algebra is the first math subject that requires students to think abstractly. It is the key to all high school math courses and essential for students to thoroughly grasp. Many students take this course in 8th grade but need extra practice in order to retain their skills. In most math courses that I teach I frequently need to reteach Algebra concepts before students can move forward in their current math course.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra II is an extension of Algebra I and prepares students for PreCalculus. Many students struggle with this course because they have either not seen Algebra in over a year while studying Geometry or because they struggled with Algebra 1. The topics in Algebra II seem unrelated and I work with students to see the connections between all the different Algebra topics as well as how they relate to real world problems.
Calculus,

Calculus

I am a Massachusetts licensed high school Math & Computer Science teacher. I have taught AP Calculus for 17 years (both AB & BC). In addition I have been an AP Calculus Reader and therefore know exactly the concepts required by the AP Collegeboard and how the tests are scored. In addition I have tutored a number of college students taking Calculus I and Calculus II. Most of my college students are either Engineering majors.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have used a number of different Geometry textbooks supplied by the schools (mostly McDougal Littell). Students tend to struggle most with Proofs. I start students with a non-math proof. For example, write a proof that you are aged 15 etc. I work with students to learn theorems, postulates, definitions and properties and how to use them in a proof. In addition I work with students in the study of polygons, area and volume.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus is a hodgepodge of seemingly unrelated topics required to learn Calculus including a polynomials, parametric, polar and vector equations, conic sections, exponents, logarithms, probability and a good amount of trigonometry. I try to connect all these topics for my students and foreshadow how they will be useful in Calculus. I show how each different function is used to model real world data and how the mathematical model is used to make predictions. By making connections and relating math to real examples my students are excited to learn the material.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I have tutored many students preparing for the SAT's. I work with students in the three areas that the SAT tests: quantitative, verbal and writing. I give students practice tests and analyze their areas of weakness as well as their test taking practices. I then prepare lessons to improve their knowledge and test taking strategies. Probability,

Probability

I absolutely love Probability! I start by having students try to predict the probability that two of them in my classroom have the same birthday (in classes > 23 students) or lead a discussion about weather forecasting. Students are instantly engaged. I then teach them the basic principle of probability (# of favorable outcomes/ # of total outcomes). Next we work on Counting principles (nCr and nPr) followed by probability problems increasing in level of difficulty. I cover random variables and probability distributions. For fun we talk about gambling odds and the probability of winning the lottery.

Trigonometry,

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is one of my favorite math subjects to teach! I show my students how the ratios of a right triangle (sine, cosine, tangent etc) allow us to solve real world problems such as the height of Mt. Everest, distance between the planets, or in the study of sound and light. I work from the unit circle and explain the importance of radian measure. I continue onto graphing transformations of trig functions and their inverses, solving trig equations and the use of trig in real world problems. I teach my students how to prove trig identities and why this is a valuable skill. In addition I love to incorporate the history of Geometry, thousands of years old, long before calculators and computers.

Knowledgeable and patient and motivating tutor

She is very knowledgeable and encouraging. My son gets along great with her. we will continue lessons with her for the next SAT exams in August. We would recommend and refer her name anytime.

Knowledgeable and insightful

My son has only one lesson with Margery but it appears to be off to a good start. She has taken inventory of his knowledge in the subject matter and thought through a course of action. In short, she's done all that can be done at this time.

Knowledgable, patient and positive tutor!!

Margery has been helping my 14 year old daughter review these past few summer weeks for her first year in high school. She has been so flexible to meet with us and is a pleasure to have over to our house. After the first lesson, my somewhat anxious daughter said she loved her and definitely wanted to do more review with Margery. Margery worked quickly with my daughter to figure out where she stood with the math topics they worked on last year and what she will be delving into this coming year. She then focused with her on the areas she was least confident, building up her ability and confidence. She gave my daughter constant reassurance and praise for the work she did and gave her strategies and techniques to get through the problems she struggled with. My daughter feels very confident NOW starting her freshman year but also is happy that Margery will be available for any supplemental help during the year. We are grateful we found Margery and would highly recommend her!

Encouraging and motivating!

Margery is tutoring my two teenage children who are both math phobic. While they continue to find the subject matter challenging, they really enjoy working with Margery and appreciate the positive feedback and encouragement that she provides. She is a thoughtful and patient tutor who really knows how to connect with her students and is interested in their success.

Super helpful tutor

Margery has tutored both of my high school children in geometry and algebra 2. I appreciate her approach because she explains the rationale behind the formulas. She is very patient and approachable. I also like that she has been able to tutor via Skype when meeting in person has not been possible because of busy after school schedules. I highly recommend Margery.

Everything a great tutor should be

We initially contacted Margery based on her reviews on WyzAnt and her location being close to ours. One meeting was enough for us and our child to decide we didn't need to talk to anyone else. Margery is knowledgeable and experienced in several subjects which made her the perfect tutor for SSAT. She is also caring, patient and engaging and is able to make a good connection with her student. Our son was looking forward to his lessons and did his assignments with enthusiasm. It takes skill and experience to make a young student feel that way about tutoring sessions in the summer. Margery is a true professional and has all the skills and experience one would expect from a great tutor. She also gets results. Our son was able to accomplish his goal in SSAT. I strongly recommend her.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful

Although only a few sessions in, my nephew is learning so much. Margery assessed his needs quickly and set him up with a work plan and the tools to help him with his studies - particularly math. My nephew is so happy with his sessions and finds Margery very easy to work with. Through my conversations with her, I found that she is an excellent, experienced educator, who is sensitive to her students' needs. Finally, I really appreciate that Margery has taken the time to talk with me about her assessment and plans.

Very patient

Margery is a wonderful tutor. My daughter has struggled with math and it has challenged her confidence. Margery is extremely warm and patient and has really built up my daughter's confidence and test scores. She is always prompt, professional, and easy to reach. Margery has a gift for tutoring kids and truly seems to enjoy her work.

Great tutor with in-depth knowledge, teaching experience, very patient and builds confidence and performance levels

Margery is an extremely knowledgeable teacher to be able to understand the students need and ensure the student understands the fundamentals thoroughly. She understands where the gaps are and what areas needs to be focused on to ensure the student thoroughly understands the subject. She is on time for the lessons, very professional and kind. She understands each student very well and does what it takes to build their confidence level to become successful and perform to their potential. She has been very flexible when we needed to change occasionally the lesson times once she has sufficient time to alter her schedule. I would highly recommend Margery.
