About Andrew

Hello,

My name is Drew and I am a 4th grade special education teacher. I have received training in Wilson Reading and also have a certification in Elementary Education 1-6.

Recently, I tutored a student who was working his way to an outside placement. We worked on third grade skills in math science and reading.

I love teaching and getting to know new students. I am very passionate about helping students make growth and can't wait to get to know more students.

I have developed many interventions as a special education teacher. I am continually looking at data as to how students are doing and what strategies in math they are able to do and not able to do. I believe that there is a strategy for every student and that it just needs to be found.

I am Wilson Reading trained. I have all of the materials including the WIST which helps me get a sense of where students with their phonics skills. It is a real pleasure of mine to teach new students how to read.

As a 4th grade special education teacher, I teach students with emotional and behavioral disorders. Because of this, I have several students that are on grade level. We teach lessons that are aligned with the common core. I have had students make multiple grade levels of growth this school year.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I teach special education 4th grade and teach my students all lessons based off of the common core. My students have made on average a full grade level progress at this point in the year. I also have developed interventions for students that struggle in the common core. I spend 25 minutes every day with each one of these students trying to work on skills needed to hit the standards in the common core.

Elementary (K-6th)

I teach 4th grade in a substantially separate classroom. I have 3 students on grade level and therefore all of my lessons are aligned with the 4th grade curriculum. I have seen my students make a full grade level's worth of growth in ELA, Math and Science/Social studies.

Elementary Math

I am currently certified as an Elementary 1-6 and Special Education Moderate disabilities teacher K-8. I pull out students based on their IEP goals in Math and work with them to close the gaps in their learning.

Phonics

I am Wilson Reading trained. I work with students every day in my classroom that are behind in their reading and I use the Wilson Reading materials to help them gain skills with their phonics.

Reading

in the 2014-2015 school year, I worked with a student on Wilson Reading. I was in the process of getting certified and my student moved away in March so I was unable to get completely certified. However, I have all of the materials and am trained in doing the program. I also teach as a special education resource room teacher in Winchester Public Schools.
