I provide one on one instruction in portraiture, still life and landscape conveniently conducted in your own studio or mine. In this traditional approach to drawing and painting, what will be taught and focused upon are perspective, value and composition in order for the student to develop strong visual language skills. The program of study begins with a specific focus on drawing, since drawing is the foundation upon which all great traditional art is built. Throughout this training, emphasis will be placed on accuracy, or more specifically, seeing and rendering correctly such things as line quality, hard and soft edges, proportion, positive and negative space through abstract form and the use of the full range of values.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I'm a graduate of Dean College in Franklin, MA and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where I majored in art history and studio art with a focus on portrait painting and illustration.
The program of study for drawing will include: Demonstration of one, two and three point perspective, creating the nine step value scale, cast drawing in charcoal, the still life in charcoal and drawing the portrait. The topic of composition will also be covered.

After all steps are gone over and the student has a firm understanding of the principals of drawing, the student will then move on to painting. Below are some of the approaches and topics than will be covered.
Flemish Technique – A technique in painting where you begin with the transfer of the drawing to the painting surface using the gridding method and a transparent underpainting is used to help balance colors. Transparent glazes are then used for the shadows and dark passages. Miiddle tones, semi-tones and highlights are then added with more opaque color.
Venetian Method – Using the Venetian approach, a medium value tone is used as the underpainting, usually somewhat brownish in color. Then opaque glazes of white and umber are applied for the shadows and middle tones creating a monochromatic image. As many color glazes as needed are then added to complete the painting. The effect of many layers of color is that the light will bounce off of each layer differently to create a more realistic image.
Grisaille - The French word “grisaille” means “gray tones.” A grisaille is a monochromatic painting executed in gray tones ranging from dark to light. The grisaille becomes a foundation to add transparent color overlays.
Color Theory – Using the color wheel, primary, secondary and tertiary colors as well as complimentary and analogous color schemes and their practical applications to painting will be discussed.
