I graduated Smith College in 2009 with a degree in Government and East Asian Studies. I spent a year in Korea teaching English as a Second Language to students between the ages of 5-12. I learned that I loved teaching from this experience.
This inspired me to pursue my current position as a tutor at City on a Hill Charter Public High School. The tutoring program at the school is unique because every students receives a tutor and it is a daily class, where a tutor works with students in groups of 3 to 4. This is a way for students to get individual attention to work on Math and English skills that supplement and support their work in class. The small group helps with building a stronger relationship and getting students specific help. The independence and freedom with curriculum also allows creative lesson plans that are tailored for the students development and improvement in their other classes. I work with mainly ninth graders. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
