About Charni

I'm an independent educator who works with individuals and small groups. I enjoy helping students find their way to understanding subjects they struggle with. I've tutored on and off for many years and like getting to know a student well enough to understand how to help them.

I have been teaching since I was a teenager; I started teaching younger students in Sunday school. I studied Theater and English Literature at university and earned an associate's degree. I worked in Theater as an actress and director for a few years and as a journalist before going back to university to get a bachelor's degree in Organizational Management. I continued to teach Sunday school and tutor students of all ages and worked as a nanny while going to university. The boy who I worked with had ADHD, so I earned a lot about special learning needs and how to help students with ADHD.

I decided to continue to graduate school and earned a master's degree in Jewish Studies. I have been working in synagogues and Jewish schools for the past 15 years but continued to tutor and work with youth groups as well. Three years ago, I decided to become an independent educator and so, I work with individuals and small groups who are interested in learning about topics that interest them. I am looking for more tutoring students.

To be honest, I struggled in school sometimes- especially with subjects I didn't 'get'. I wish I had known someone who understood that sometimes my brain thought things through differently than the way the teachers taught. - I try to be that kind of tutor- I try to understand that every one learns differently and needs to be taught accordingly.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

My grandfather was a Presbyterian minister, my aunt is an Anglican minister, my cousin is a Catholic priest and I am a Jewish rabbi. Besides studying comparative religion at Seminary, I have years of experience of interfaith studies and understanding simply from family reunions.
