About Chris

I am a University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) graduate student seeking an internship in the biological sciences industry. I received my bachelor’s degree in biology and my master’s degree in biotechnology through the university’s bachelor’s to master’s program. Throughout my time at UML, I have been very involved in the biological sciences department, where I have gained a large amount of laboratory and teaching experience.

I have taught Microbiology and Genetics as an undergraduate student assistant. I have also been a member of the UMass Lowell Centers for Learning for 3 years. I tutored Biochemistry, Molecular biology, Genetics, cell culture and general biology as well as some general chemistry.Students would drop in for one-on-one tutoring. As a graduate student I have been working as a teaching assistant for the past 1.5 years. I have taught life science (a high school level biology elective course for non-science majors), experimental biology (an introductory laboratory core for college freshmen biology majors) and molecular biology (a senior level biology laboratory based course).

Biology is one of the most difficult subjects to tutor because, more often than not, it can't be taught by drilling different problems until the "steps" becomes familiar enough to the student. More often, reading material is the only means students have to learn the concepts associated with the subject. This is the reason why many students, even those having trouble, do not seek help in biology as readily as in other subjects. This is why I approach biology tutoring by trying to get the student to think of the subjects in ways other then just reading the textbook. I get students to think of different biological processes visually by using textbook diagrams and even simpler diagrams of my own. In this is way, I can simplify a large body of written material a few simple visual aides. This makes for a great supplement to reading the text and it provides the student with additional means of studying, making the subject more interesting and hopefully easier to learn. I also help students with their technical writing skills in lab reports and term papers. I can proofread reports and offer helpful suggestions and even help a student organize their thoughts before writing.

I have a lot of experience in working with students with a wide range of abilities due to the diverse courses I've taught as a teaching assistant as well as the variety of different students that Ive tutored. I have been honing my teaching skill for the past 4 years and believe I have a lot to offer in the area of biology.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
