About Pat

I have been a teacher, a tutor on a college level, a business executive, a mother of five, and an actress, a true and funny story. I write Middle School Young Adult stories, and adult fiction. I love writing stories— I'm sure that's why I love teaching creative writing.

My teaching experience includes: Public High School Special needs, Public Middle School Seventh Grade, Catholic School Fourth, Fifth, Seventh and Eighth grades. My teaching experience has extended to elementary school math, history and science, but Language Arts (spelling, reading, and writing) are my major subjects. My experience also includes teaching English in schools whose students spoke English as a second language. I have studied Spanish on a college level, but I am not a native speaker.

My methods for teaching reading include whole word, phonetic analysis of words for pronunciation, and rote memory, if that is appropriate. My techniques for teaching elementary school writing include emphasis on creativity, spelling, grammar instruction, handwriting and use of word processing programs. For upper grades, I again emphasize creativity, outlining content, various styles of writing, such as writing research papers, creative fiction, poetry, graphic art story writing, and other ideas the student can envision. In both reading and writing, I believe in a collaboration between the teacher and the student. The resulting paper or story should be the student's work not the teacher's. From spelling to writing papers for upper grades, I enjoy the interaction with my students. It is a learning experience for me as well as my students.

I hope to hear from interested parents!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
