About Lynne

I have a liberal arts education from a prestigious university, and my interests and capabilities are diverse. Although my undergraduate major was physics, my minor area of concentration was English - I could not face all of those lab courses without dedicated time to read and write!

Some describe me as a 'perpetual student'. I have taken courses throughout my life that I found interesting, heedless of their practical application to an advanced degree or to my career. In short - I love learning! I have a passion for teaching, and I believe the two go hand-in-glove.

I have had a successful career in applied physics, software development, and system analysis. Effective communication skills - reading comprehension and writing - were integral to my success, and I have co-authored papers published in technical journals.

I transitioned from technology to education three years ago, and I am thrilled to work with students daily.

While I am qualified in many areas, I have a particular interest in science and mathematics. I want to share my enthusiasm for these subjects by helping students grasp both the fundamentals and the reasons they are exciting for our future.

I am certified to teach mathematics in MA, and I expect to complete my Master of Education degree in special education for students with emotional disorders in August 2015. I have two years experience teaching high school mathematics for at-risk and proven-risk young people.

As your tutor, I will commit to reviewing your individual circumstances and preparing lessons or exercises as appropriate for specific areas of focus. If appropriate, I will contact your teachers for their assessments and advice. I will come to every session thoroughly prepared to maximize our time together.

The rate quoted is adjustable based upon individual or family circumstances. I firmly believe that education should be accessible to everyone, without regard to their financial means. I live in the greater Lowell area. We can hold our tutoring sessions either at the Lowell Public Library or at your home.

Thank you for your consideration, and I am looking forward to meeting you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I hold a preliminary certification in Massachusetts to teach mathematics. I have taught high school mathematics - algebra 1 and 2, geometry, and trigonometry in Lowell during the past year. I have worked as a tutor and teacher's assistant for algebra and geometry at a public charter school in Boston while I complete my permanent teaching license.

Algebra 1

I hold a preliminary certification in Massachusetts to teach mathematics. I taught both algebra 1 and algebra 2 in Lowell over the past year. In the past, I have worked as a tutor and teacher's assistant for algebra at a public charter school in Boston.

Algebra 2

I hold a preliminary certification in Massachusetts to teach mathematics. I have taught algebra 2 in Lowell during the past year. In the past, I have worked as a tutor and teacher's assistant for all levels of algebra at a public charter school in Boston.

ASVAB

My personal scores on the ASVAB exam were in the 99th percentile. I was accepted into a Navy ROTC program at Vanderbilt University, but ultimately decided to choose a different career path. I have worked with several students in the past to successfully complete the ASVAB exam.

Computer Programming

I worked as a software engineer and system analyst since 1999. I am highly qualified in programming languages that include Oracle PL/SQL, SQL, and PowerBuilder (similar to JavaScript). I have an in-depth knowledge of the software development life cycle, object-oriented programming, and algorithm development. I have particular expertise in developing user interfaces and in relational database design. I have excellent references, which I am happy to provide upon request.

Computer Science

I worked in software engineering (applied computer science) and system analysis since 1999. I am an expert at developing algorithms to manipulate complex data sets for semiconductor devices to make manufacturing decisions that optimize device performance. I am also skilled at working with a variety of data structures and using sophisticated mathematical tools such as MATLAB to model the performance of photovoltaic and photoconductive devices, comparing actual performance to that predicted by computational theory. I have excellent references, which I am happy to provide upon request.

Elementary Math

I hold a preliminary certification in Massachusetts to teach mathematics. I have taught mathematics in Lowell during the past year. In the past, I worked as a tutor and teacher's assistant for algebra and geometry at a public charter school in Boston. I enjoy working with students of all ages and have a deep well of patience and interest in young students' success.

Geometry

I hold a preliminary certification in Massachusetts to teach mathematics. I have taught geometry in Lowell during the past year. In the past, I worked as a tutor and teacher's assistant for algebra and geometry at a public charter school in Boston.

Microsoft Access

As a database developer, I have used Microsoft Access on numerous projects to both store data and to create user interfaces to interact with the data. It is similar to some of the Oracle work I have done, although, Access has a more user-friendly interface and cannot be used efficiently for a large database.

Oracle

I have more than ten years experience working with Oracle databases and developing packages, procedures, and functions using Oracle PL/SQL and SQL*Plus. I am completely conversant in DDL, DML, and DCL. In addition, I have worked to design relational databases using Oracle, including creating tables, defining primary and foreign keys, defining data elements, adding indexes to columns to optimize performance, and managing schemas, user roles and privileges. I am adept with the various Oracle data types including collections, complex queries, cursors, and in writing code with robust exception handling. I am able to provide excellent references upon request.

Physical Science

I have a B.S. in physics and 27 hours completed in graduate level physics. I have more than ten years experience working in industry as a device physicist.

Great Experience with Lynne! — Lynne is a great math tutor and was very accommodating with my daughter's schedule. Showed patience and understanding with the areas that my daughter needed to focus on. Adjusted to my daughters pace and understanding before moving to the next. She has taught my daughter to slow down, write everything out, and more importantly help build the confidence she needed to continue to be strong in math. ...
