I'd like to help your child in one or more of the following areas of Reading: Phonology, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension or SAT prep. I am a certified Orton Gillingham Reading Interventionist/tutor as well as a certified English teacher and Reading Specialist. I have 12 years experience helping children with language based reading difficulties learn to read. In that time I have been fortunate to see children who began with no real reading skills, gain skill, confidence, and motivation for continuing to learn to read and read to learn. The younger a child begins to get help, the faster the improvement. The older the child is, the longer it will take. So it's good to begin as soon as you can, but it's never too late either!
I also have expertise to coach students in grammar and writing skills for essays, writing and research, and also for improved performance on standardized tests like the Verbal SAT.
I have 16 years' experience as a high school English teacher.
I hope you will consider me if your child is having difficulties with reading or other areas related to English and is not progressing in school.
My fee is reflective of my education and experience.
I look forward to helping you or your child improve in learning to read and in reading to learn. Hello,
I'd like to help your child in one or more of the following areas of Reading: Phonology, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension or … Read more
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am an Orton-Gillingham Certified Reading tutor with an accredited certification from Massachusetts General Hospital, Reading Disabilities Unit (2002). This program is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Educational Council (IMSLEC). My program of study consisted of 230 hours of practicum and lectures from June 2001-May 2002. For the past 12 years, since graduation, I have been tutoring students with dyslexia (AKA language-based learning disabilities). In addition I have continued education CEU's credits in the field; these credits are needed in order to maintain my IMSLEC certification.
My background in English is so thorough that one of my colleagues has referred to me as a "Grammar Guru!" I have a solid background originating in Catholic Grammar School as well as a linguist's and poet's appreciation for the structure of language. One of my goals is to help students see the common sense connections that are there in grammar. Grammar is not the enemy! On the contrary, with good instruction, it opens students eyes to understanding how words and sentences all fit together.
My background in Reading covers a number of different areas. I am a certified Reading Specialist and a former HS English Teacher. I have specialized training and am certified through MA General Hospital's Reading Disabilities Clinic to address the reading difficulties of children with dyslexia, which can also be referred to as a language based learning disability. I have been working with children with reading disabilities since 2002 and have seen children who struggle with the foundations of language begin to be able to read with more confidence and facility through the Orton-Gillingham approach. This approach is a multisensory way of teaching reading. In addition to phonological awareness and phonics--essential foundations often missing for dyslexic children--reading instruction includes fluency, comprehension as well as spelling. It is a total instructional experience.
My background in Reading covers a number of different areas. I am a certified Reading Specialist and a former HS English Teacher. I am further trained in Reading Comprehension and Fluency Instruction.
SAT Reading skills require both content and strategy instruction. In many instances, students can improve their overall performance on this section of the test by knowing and applying some simple, yet important strategies. "You don't know what you don't know," but once students do know, then their approach can become more skillful and efficient. My goal as a tutor is to provide students with the information and practice they need in order to become better test takers of the Reading portion of the SAT.
I am able to help your student learn how to write/compose on the sentence, paragraph and essay level in preparation for the SAT essay. This will involve analyzing sample essays to note how the ones graded with full credit are developed and organized. It will also involve practicing stating a thesis and position on a given topic through development of supporting details. This will be done without a time pressure at first and then in a timed practice. Since the SAT also tests for knowledge of grammar, sentence and paragraph structure, these areas will also be practiced through SAT prep exercises.
My own background includes teaching Writing Process to older students in both public and private school settings as well as in one-to-one tutoring. Some of my own writing has been published in literary magazines.
I have over ten years' experience in helping High School students prepare for the SAT and the PSAT. I am also a former high school English teacher and am a certified Reading Specialist. My entire professional career as well as my avocation as poet and writer have given me a deep knowledge and versatility in language. The nuts and bolts of skill, syntax and grammar as well as the nuances of reading and writing styles allow me to approach students in a way that helps them understand more easily. My facility lends itself to their ease and comfort in asking questions and in understanding more their own strengths and weaknesses. From there instruction flows more naturally.
I able able to help children with beginning manuscript/printing and cursive writing for older children. I use Handwriting Without Tears materials which are structured and child friendly.
In addition, I am able to help your older child learn how to write/compose on the sentence, paragraph and essay level. My background includes teaching Writing Process in both public and private school settings to older students. I also have completed coursework in Project Read's Writing Strand.
