I have been helping children learn to read for over 13 years. For many children reading doesn't come that easy. What goes into learning to read? Phonology--hearing and identifying the sounds of the language, Phonics--connecting the sounds with the corresponding letters, Fluency--reading smoothly and with understanding, Vocabulary--understanding a good number of words for grade level and beyond, and, of course, Comprehension--remembering and understanding what we read. Is it any wonder that this task is a challenge? If any one of these areas is weak, then the whole reading experience is held back. That's where an experienced tutor can make a big difference. I am a certified Orton Gillingham Reading Interventionist/tutor as well as a certified English teacher and Reading Specialist. I have 13 years experience helping children with language based reading difficulties AKA dyslexia learn to read. In that time I have been fortunate to see children with little reading skills, gain those needed skills as well as the confidence and motivation to continue reading. The younger a child begins to get help, the faster the improvement. The older the child is, the longer it takes. So it's good to begin as soon as you can, but it's never too late either!
I also have expertise in coaching students in spelling, grammar and handwriting writing skills.
Prior to becoming certified in teaching Reading, I taught high school English for 17 years.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am an Orton-Gillingham Certified Reading tutor with an accredited certification from Massachusetts General Hospital, Reading Disabilities Unit (2002). This program is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Educational Council (IMSLEC). My program of study consisted of 230 hours of practicum and lectures from June 2001-May 2002. For the past 12 years, since graduation, I have been tutoring students with dyslexia (AKA language-based learning disabilities). In addition I have continued education CEU's credits in the field; these credits are needed in order to maintain my IMSLEC certification.
My background in English is so thorough that one of my colleagues has referred to me as a "Grammar Guru!" I have a solid background originating in Catholic Grammar School as well as a linguist's and poet's appreciation for the structure of language. One of my goals is to help students see the common sense connections that are there in grammar. Grammar is not the enemy! On the contrary, with good instruction, it opens students eyes to understanding how words and sentences all fit together.
My background in Reading covers a number of different areas. I am a certified Reading Specialist and a former HS English Teacher. I have specialized training and am certified through MA General Hospital's Reading Disabilities Clinic to address the reading difficulties of children with dyslexia, which can also be referred to as a language based learning disability. I have been working with children with reading disabilities since 2002 and have seen children who struggle with the foundations of language begin to be able to read with more confidence and facility through the Orton-Gillingham approach. This approach is a multisensory way of teaching reading. In addition to phonological awareness and phonics--essential foundations often missing for dyslexic children--reading instruction includes fluency, comprehension as well as spelling. It is a total instructional experience.
