About Doretta

Hello!
I am a grandma with four grandchildren. I have worked as a teacher assistant for twelve years BEFORE becoming a special needs teacher! I have worked in Connecticut as a summer teacher for severe needs students. Students with seizures, aggressive students and developmentally delayed students. The ages ranged from seven years old, I worked in extended day program with a group of seven year old boys with strong autistic symptoms, to twenty two year old developementally delayed students. I have worked in a resource room in inner city Springfield school with ten kindergarten special needs students with mild to moderate concerns for two years and assisted with four grade english language learners needing grammer support. I now work in Longmeadow, as a special needs teacher for mild to moderate needs students. I worked with preschool this year and began my work with second through fifth grade students prior to this year in a secluded classroom that mainstreamed moderate needs students.
I enjoy working with young children. I am certified to work in a child care environment as well. I work at making learning fun. I listen to the students interest and incorporate it in my academics to maintain the students interest. I want my student to ask questions, learn to problem solve and feel independent in skills necessary for living as independently as possible.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been taching young children with a license for eight years. I have basic math and english language skills as well as reading and basic printing (writing) materials and background. I want learning to be fun, challenging and successful for my students. I want my students to ask me questions and work on problem solving skills.
My previous experience has been as a teacher assistant in early intervention for twelve years. I have taught small groups of children with varied skills within one classroom. I am famaliar with Harcourt and Scott-Foresman readers. I come with a variety of resource to help support the learning process.
