Having taught for over 20 years at the university level, I'm known for my skill at recognizing what you need as a student to achieve success. My students describe me as someone who builds their confidence and skills in a patient and nurturing way. They tell me my standards are high, but I make sure they get there! When I work with you, I'm 100% engaged with you as a person, matching what I teach to what you need. As a teacher, my work has focused on teaching writing, literature, and history, and I've dedicated many years to teaching academic English to international students and adults. Currently, I teach returning engineers, bankers, filmmakers, and businessmen at MIT, as well as international students from China at a private high school. I've been tutoring for over 30 years, have trained teachers in the teaching of English, and have ten years of advanced graduate study

In my work at Brandeis, I reviewed hundreds of college essays from applicants and saw what mattered. For ten years, I've been helping students create winning application essays. Last year, my tutees were accepted to Johns Hopkins, New York University, Tufts, Emory, Purdue, Boston University, and Clemson, among others. How do you create an essay that stands out? By showing them how amazing you are--just as yourself--and showing them what makes you the absolutely right student for them. One student accepted to Tufts last year was told by her admissions officer that it was her essay we worked on together that made the difference. Let me help.

If you are a junior or senior and need individualized test prep with SAT or ACT, let me help you decode the test, build on your strengths as a thinker and test-taker and increase your score. The ACT in particular is a test that can be prepped for as can the new SAT.

For high school students, I am here to help you succeed in any aspect of reading or writing, from history to English to psychology. If you are an international student, I will help you increase your fluency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. My high school students advanced 30 points on the TOEFL test last year!

What sets me apart as a tutor is that I understand how to meet you where you are. I can help you figure out what you need to advance successfully. Everyone has great ideas--and so do you--but writing well requires skill to move from creative chaos to compelling prose. Through drafting, revising, and organizing, you can improve your mastery, your confidence and your grades one step at a time. When reading, even the hardest text can be decoded with effective strategies. My teaching style is engaged, interactive and individually focused.

At Brandeis University, MIT, Wheelock College, Gordon College, and Mass College of Pharmacy, I have taught undergraduates, graduates, and high school students to write and read effectively. Whether preparing a college essay for that dream school of your choice or figuring out what the 9th grade teacher wants for an essay on Lord of the Flies or succeeding in 7th grade English, I have spent years guiding students through the writing process.

My background includes a Master's from Brandeis in English, a BA in English with Honors from Trinity College, and a career as a journalist and magazine editor. I look forward to working with you!

Professional Who Understands Teaching

We have worked with several tutors over the years, and our first lesson with Nancy was the best lesson we have had so far. She is an extremely strong teacher who understands how to get kids interested in learning. She is enthusiastic and skilled at reaching kids and getting them to enjoy the process of thinking, which in turns, shows in their work. We look forward to many sessions with Nancy.

knowledgeable and patient tutor

She is very patient, experienced and showed great understanding of what the kid needs. Unfortunately, Our summer plan changed and may not be able to hire private tutor at the time being. May go back to her in the future.

Dedicated, patient, and reliable

Nancy has helped me with all kinds of assignments, from my freshman research project for history to analytical essays for English. In the beginning of the year, I had trouble with my thesis and developing arguments for English papers. Nancy has taught me how to handle these problems and now I can express an idea-driven, specific, and supportable claim in a clear and concise manner. With the help I received from Nancy, my writing tone and style are now sophisticated with purposeful flourishes and attention to detail.

Nancy is the best tutor ever!

After working with two other tutors on my graduate school essays, I felt something was missing. And then I hired Nancy. Her talent at helping me revise turned my essay into what my academic advisor called “impressive!” As a student from China who attended college here, I want to attend an Ivy League graduate school. I have strong professional experience, but I still wanted really convincing essays. Nancy’s respect for my dreams and ability to help me find the right words gave me the voice I needed. I would recommend her to anyone wanting expert help writing application essays!

Great for SAT English Prep

Nancy is helping my son prepare for the English component of the SAT. My son is already in good shape for Math and Science, but I would like nuanced preparation for English. Nancy is doing an amazing job in helping my son with vocabulary, reading and writing. She is engaging and works well with my teenage kid. I will continue to work with her and have no hesitations recommending her to anyone.

One of the BEST!

Nancy is definitely one of the best tutors I've ever met! She is not only professional and patient, but also nice and fun. We met each other during my senior year of high school, when all the stressful college application process was happening. Since English is my second language, I had a difficult time writing essays and supplements. While we worked together, she helped me with grammar, vocabulary and writing. Every time I sent her my rough drafts, she would quickly respond to my messages with detailed corrections. Her encouragement and support in every lesson helped me to persist and succeed. Now I am in a great college and I truly appreciate her assistance. She is one of the best tutors I've ever seen in this industry.
