About David

With my most recent teaching experiences, teaching literature and college writing courses in the Boston area at two community colleges, Bunker Hill and Mass Bay, and at a bridge-to-college program in inner-city Dorchester, as well as teaching ESL at Southern New Hampshire University and at major multinationals (BASF; Bayer; Kellogg) in Bogotá, Colombia, I have developed a versatility and enthusiasm beneficial to students of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds.
The foundation for my teaching career was initially developed by teaching ESL in rural Thailand as a teenager and later working as a tutor in grade-school test prep and language arts in working-class and multiethnic neighborhoods of New York, and as a private tutor for students at Austin’s University of Texas. I have worked with a range of class sizes, from three to over twenty. Working at first with smaller groups, I came to a finer understanding of how to work with specific challenges facing each unique individual, but also found how to engage with each student’s interests and motivations, connecting that constructive energy to the wider world. I know how to create just the right degree of challenge in class-work and homework to keep the student alert and excited with the material. Having worked with beginning English speakers in executive corporate positions, as well as with American graduate students and first-generation English speakers at poorly funded elementary schools, I understand the range of skills and goals in English literacy appropriate to each student’s cultural, educational, and professional contexts.
At present, I would like to continue my career as an educator. Furthermore, as a writer of essays and fictions and as an avid reader, I have a lifelong commitment to education and the humanities, especially literature, history, and the social sciences. Thus, as a believer in humanistic values and empathetic toward students from both diverse and adverse backgrounds, I am your ideally suited tutor, online or in person.
