About Eric

I have 15 years of classroom teaching experience at both the middle and high school levels. Most of this time I taught American and World History. However, I have also taught Bible, geography, government, writing, study skills, and physical education classes. I have been a coach, tutor, trip leader, and tour guide. I love to learn and share my passion for knowledge and discovery with others, especially students.

One of my favorite experiences teaching was designing and implementing a study skills curriculum. I enjoyed helping students overcome obstacles in their own learning by modeling the fundamental disciplines of organization, reading, writing, and test preparation. Students often found that simple and consistent study strategies markedly improved their performance in the classroom. Although I enjoy teaching social studies subjects the most, it is rewarding to show students that study skills become life skills when seen and used as tools to find success across all areas of their school work.

My father instilled in me a love for the English language at an early age. I enjoy expressing myself and my love of knowledge through the art of writing. In order to do this well one must appreciate, learn, and use the fine mechanics and rich variety of the English language. I like both the details found in mastering grammar and the excitement of learning new words and phrases that add to one's vocabulary. In most classes I taught I used writing activities to reinforce the historical concepts of the lesson. I learned over time that the study of history was well suited to practice English skills and the writing process. For a good student of history, language is one of his/her most important tools. Therefore I taught students English to communicate history through writing.

I excelled in my own coursework during my study of history, graduating Cum Laude with a 3.75 GPA. More important to my effectiveness as a teacher in this area is my passion for the subject. I love the past. The past and the historical record is a world to explore. What happened, when, and why are fascinating questions with answers that reverberate through time and affect me and the world I live in today. Studying history has always been an extremely gratifying intellectual exercise. It is like putting the pieces of a puzzle together to find an amazing picture. As such history offers students a discipline to sharpen their analytical and critical thinking skills as well as a story to enjoy. My students discover my passion for history quickly. I think they also discover a world in which their own desire to learn can grow.

I would love to share my joy of learning with you. Please contact me to learn more about my experiences and availability. My schedule is flexible. I look forward to working with you to help you succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Writing

I taught social studies and study skills for fifteen years. Writing was a skill I consistently taught within the curriculum and had my students practice with various assignments and exercises. I often met with students individually to help them practice their writing skills. After leaving my classes, former students often commented that my commitment to strong writing habits prepared them well for the next level.
