##### About Shelly

I am a math teacher at an urban public school, currently teaching Intro to Algebra 2 and Mathematics 2, which is a blended algebra and geometry course. My students are in grades 9-12. Many are under IEP contracts or 504 plans. Of my 25 students per class, about 5 are LEP or former. I love to teach math in a way that students use their natural thinking and thought processes to approach problems, while I help guide problem solving skills. One of the most important outcomes of success in mathematics in my classes is increased creativity. I think it is important for students to explore math concepts and use their own creative methods to express their understanding and solutions in mathematics.

For students who need intervention and critical review, I provide clear basic lessons that help them to understand the fundamental components of a concept. I model the concepts and try to find visuals, real-world scenarios, activities, videos, and resources that will help my students to make the necessary connections to the math. I follow up with practice problems and exercises that will help my students to refine their understanding of the concepts.

Most importantly, I listen to the students and their needs. I assess their skills and if needed, can diagnose areas for improvement. My lessons are entirely student centered. They are designed and differentiated based on the students and their learning styles. All learners have their own modes of learning and mediums of expression, so it is very critical that the teacher tailor lessons to those specific aspects of the students.

I am patient, thorough, encouraging, caring, intelligent, down to earth, and enthusiastic about all students success in academia. My teaching philosophy is heavily influenced by the idea that all students can learn. My purpose is to influence the youth to achieve academic success because studies show that future success and financial stability are heavily related to success in STEM subjects. I want to facilitate academic excellence especially in math so that students can have an even better chance of leading fulfilling futures.

I can teach basic concepts in math, algebra, and geometry. I am fluent in reading, writing, and dialogue in Spanish. I have had 10 years of Spanish courses in 2nd grade, middle school, high school, and college so learning Spanish through my tutoring service is also available. I can help with homework, study skills, essay writing, psychology, sociology, some areas of physics that involve algebra, and even piano lessons as I have had 16 years of piano lessons and 22 years playing experience. I try to do all of my tutoring online but we can also work at the library on some days.

I am certified by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in the state of Massachusetts to teach middle school and high school mathematics. I have also completed a Master of Arts program in Teaching Mathematics 5-12. Feel encouraged to contact me to discuss your academic needs and I look forward to helping you excel.
