In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I began my teaching career at Grafton Job Academy (Grafton Job Corps) as a Career Development instructor. My primary responsibility was to teach students "employability" skills, such as: writing a resume and cover letter; job search/research skills; how to interview; and presenting a professional appearance. After that, I taught an elective, to high school seniors, called "Jobs For Bay State Graduates." The class was part of a national program (Jobs for America's Graduates) and the curriculum focused on career and college readiness skills.
Before I switched careers and became a teacher, I was a marketing and sales executive for over 15 years. I worked for an advertising agency, as VP of Sales, and then was the VP of Sales and Marketing at a local bank. In those positions, public speaking skills were critical as my job centered around making presentations to prospective clients and speaking at seminars. In addition to my practical experience, I've also taken many public speaking courses and seminars including the Dale Carnegie course.
