I’ve always loved math, and I’m now studying it (along with Computer Science) at Wesleyan University, with a math GPA of 3.97 and an overall GPA of 3.91.
I've informally tutored friends, family, and classmates my whole life. In the past two years, I've made that past time into a side-gig. I’ve learned that I really enjoy helping others understand specific concepts and see the underlying beauty and interconnectedness of math.
I scored a 1570 on the SAT with a perfect math score, and I’ve gotten As on all math courses I’ve completed since starting high school. I've finished the math major at Wesleyan, and am moving on to graduate-level coursework in the subject for the last two years of my bachelors.
So far, I’ve tutored students on a variety of topics, including but not limited to, pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, precalculus, and calculus.
My tutoring style emphasizes connecting complicated seeming concepts with their simple first-principle foundations. I want students to understand that the math they are working on is part of a consistent system built from a relatively small number of simple core concepts. I also try to connect specific concepts that my student is working on to other concepts that may seem unrelated at first to show that there are multiple ways to understand any given concept and that a perspective shift may be all that is needed for a concept to “click.” I find these perspectives incredibly helpful in my own problem solving career, both in math and in general.
My tutoring style is patient and friendly. I want students to be relaxed and enjoy the problem-solving process. To that end, I think that elementary, high school, and college students sometimes feel more comfortable working with someone closer to their age than the typical math tutor.
