About Matt

I'm Matt, a high school math teacher with 4 years of teaching experience in Memphis, TN. My current day job is to coach high school math teachers in Boston, where I love talking about how to help students fall in love with math. I have a Master's in Urban Education from Union University (located in Jackson, TN) and a Bachelor's of Science from Vanderbilt University, where I double majored in Secondary Education and Mathematics. As a teacher, I taught Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Trigonometry, AP Statistics, and ACT Math. Personally, statistics was my favorite class to teach.

My tutoring experience comes from years of after-school sessions with students, in which I always tried to find new ways to present the math so that students could find a way to grab on. I particularly like using interactive tools like Desmos and Geogebra to give students a chance to play around with ideas and find patterns themselves. I believe all students can be good at math as long as they are given the right opportunities to make sense of the ideas being taught. I've found lots of great ways to help students make sense of math, and have seen many students come to enjoy math because of that.

I've studied and taught math for years and I believe good tutoring involves learning from you about what you already know well and what you believe you can do in math. Once I know those things, I can create a personal path to mastering what you want you learn. I look forward to hearing from you about how I can help you reach your goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Precalculus

I taught pre-calculus for 2 years in Memphis, TN.

SAT Math

I taught high school math for 4 years. During this time, I taught Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-calculus (which includes trigonometry). All these subjects are integral to success on the SAT.

Statistics

I taught high school math for 4 years, including 2 years of AP Statistics.

Trigonometry

I taught Pre-Calculus in Memphis, TN for 2 years. The pre-calculus course there involves a lot of trigonometry, and trig was one of my favorite parts of the course to teach!

Warm and knowledgable tutor

Matt was great! He met with my daughter and first got to know her and her style of learning (which he did not charge for). He was engaging and knowledgable and she seemed to like him a lot. She felt very comfortable asking him questions and talking through the material. He truly seems to care about her understanding the material not just getting a good grade. I would highly recommend Matt!
