About Samuel

Hello,

Thank you for taking a look at my profile. If you're looking to improve your classical piano, Latin grammar, or programming techniques, I can help you! Although I am seeking work as a tutor, I believe that learning is a task that must be undertaken by the pupil. As a tutor, I see it as my responsibility to understand first what the pupil knows, and then help him or her to the next step. For example, with piano, I would not use the Suzuki method to instruct a student; rather, I would ask him or her to play, observe the abilities, and then work with the student from that point, offering challenges, encouragement, and instruction at the appropriate times.

I've briefly outlined below my background in each subject.

I am a classically trained pianist with a degree in music from the College of the Holy Cross. I am proficient in music theory and piano technique, and I have a good understanding of piano literature and the history of classical music. I will be able to assist beginners, intermediate players, and many players who would be considered advanced. I can also help a student with theory or compositional problems.

I have studied, read, and spoken Latin for 10 years. I have read Vergil's Aeneid as well as Caesar's Gallic Wars, and I participate in bi-monthly Latin speaking meetings that are held in Boston. I have an excellent command of Latin grammar, and unlike most Latin teachers, I can also converse in Latin.

I wrote software for three years at a tech company in Boston. I have a professional's grasp of software construction, including proficiency with algorithms, data structures, and object-oriented programming and software design. If you are looking for help with a particular language, I can help with SQL, VB, PHP, and Javascript.

Thanks again for reading through this. I hope to hear from you soon!

Best,
Sam

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have a music degree from the College of the Holy Cross, where I graduated cum laude, with honors. I've taken four semesters of Music Theory, and have learned both movable and fixed solfege. I will use the Dannhauser method of ear training with my students.

Latin

I taught myself Latin in highschool, and took three courses that covered Vergil's entire oeuvre while I was in college. Currently, I'm reading Caesar's Gallic Wars, and I participate in the lively Latin-speaking community of Boston.

Music History

I took two semesters in Music History from the College of the Holy Cross. I am familiar with major historical and theoretical developments in Western Music, up to and including the modern schools of Serialism, Minimalism, and Spectralism. I can provide students with scores and records that are characteristic of time periods, can discuss relevant features like Fugue and Sonata forms, and can give biographical details of the lives of many composers.

Piano

I've played piano for 20 years, and I have a degree in Music from the College of the Holy Cross. I've studied with many teachers, most notably Sergey Schepkin and Sarah Grunstein. I have a very advanced technique, and a very large repertoire to use with students.

Grateful for Sam ~ SQL — Sam's help was professional, accurate, and above and beyond what I expected. The goal was to point me to the right resources on a highly visible software product and get me focused on the work needed. Being new to SQL, Sam was able to orient me and relieve a lot of frustration. Also, I was in a time crunch, and Sam was able to meet me on short notice. ...
