I have had extensive classroom teaching experience. I have taught both graduate and 'non-traditional'--i.e., working adults students in psychology, counseling, and social work.
I am an excellent writer and proofreader, and have been TEFL certified to teach English as a Second Language.
I have worked with students of many backgrounds, and am comfortable working with a wide range of educational issues.
I have been employed by several graduate schools in the Greater Boston area, and have extensive experience working in community-based organizations.
I enjoy teaching and training a great deal, and it gives me pleasure to see my students learn and grow.
I am outgoing and look forward to new challenges in my work with students. Positive feedback to my students seems to be the best way to both establish a good working relationship, and to motivate my students.
I am demanding without being unnecessarily critical; students asking for my assistance may have already had less than positive experiences in a more formal classroom setting.
I have spent a good deal of time working on basic skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. I am available to work with individuals as well as small groups (3-5 students). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an Instructor, one of the courses that I taught every year was 'Child and Adolescent Development and Psychopathology'. There was a strong focus given to current research and science concerning Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This involved assessment and management of this still controversial diagnosis.
Some common techniques included classroom management, reading and study skills, and personalized learning techniques. The most contentious debates were concerning the dilemma of medicating a sometimes very young student.
It seemed to help the students in my courses when I disclosed my own struggles with ADHD, and the methods that were helpful to me in my successful academic career.
I have been a Mac user for many years. I like the sleek design, functionality, and friendly user interface.
Quite intuitive for the uninitiated, fast, powerful, and the ability to read and format documents from PCs that are not Mac-compatible.
The native browser (Safari) is competitive with any others. However, if one is more comfortable with others--i.e., Firefox, Chrome, Opera; all are readily compatible with the Mac Operating System.
In the course of my studying and teaching at several institutions of higher learning, I have had to do many writing assignments, including those required for two Master's degrees (Social Welfare and Clinical Psychology), and for a PhD in Clinical Psychology. I have done multiple trainings and workshops, which required a great deal of writing, mostly in the preparation stages.
I am especially good at editing the work of others. I like to believe that I can offer advice and criticism in a positive, non-threatening manner.
My goal are to make writing seem less of a 'mystery' and more of a powerful way to express my students' own 'voice', thereby empowering them to master the writing process.
