About Anne

I am a recently retired high school teacher who has taught English as a Second Language, regular English and social studies for many years. Over the years I have enjoyed working with students from many different ethnic and language backgrounds, including students with learning disabilities. I have experience teaching reading skills, literary analysis, writing and grammar, and I have prepared students for standardized tests. My teaching style depends on the needs of the student. I enjoy working one-on-one or with groups of students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have many years of experience teaching ESL in a large high school in Boston, where I worked with students from all over the world. My students came from Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe, and they spoke many different languages. I also taught for three years in Zimbabwe, where the official language is English, but where my students spoke several different first languages. I have lived and studied or taught in six different countries in Africa and Europe, and have traveled widely on both continents. I have also traveled in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean islands. English is my native language, but I also speak French, Spanish and Tshiluba (from the D.R. Congo, and I know a little Portuguese and Haitian Creole. I love working with people from different cultures and language backgrounds, because I have learned a lot from them over the years.
