About Alexandra

I'm looking to tutor students of any age in English, math, history, or ESL/ELL this summer. In May, I graduated from Hofstra University Summa Cum Laude with a BA in linguistics and minors in Middle Eastern studies and anthropology. I'm enrolled in an accelerated BA/MA program, and in a year I will graduate with a MA in forensic linguistics, which is the study of language in a legal/forensic context.

In the past eight years of high school and college, I've developed strong study skills and methods of teaching myself difficult material. As for additional academic qualifications, I am a member of Phi Beta Kappa, which is the most prestigious honorary society in the U.S. as well as a member of Hofstra's Honors College. Part of being an effective tutor is being able to communicate study techniques, and that is something I am able to do while teaching.

A tutor's attitude is just as important as their knowledge of their subject, in my opinion. I'm an upbeat, friendly person, and I'll make a student's success a team effort. I love to help others, and I'll spend as much time as a student needs on any difficult concept. For every tutoring session, I typically spend about an hour of preparation time to ensure that I can teach the content the best as possible. My favorite part about tutoring is seeing that "aha!" moment. I also enjoy thinking of creative ways to make lessons fun.

In the past I have tutored Spanish, geometry, and Arabic. I was able to help a student raise his grade from a 65% to a 95% when I was a Spanish tutor. Although I did not study math in college, it has always been a subject that I've enjoyed. I tutored a student in geometry in high school, and his test scores went up over the course of the semester. I also assist my younger sister with her math homework on a regular basis (sometimes over Skype when I'm away at college!). I've found that algebra 1 is a subject that I can explain well, but I'm also able to tutor in elementary and middle school math, pre-algebra, geometry, and algebra 2.

My understanding of the ins and outs of language from my major will come in handy if a student needs assistance editing a college application essay or another piece of writing, preparing for the SAT or ACT writing sections, or just English in general. Writing has always been one of my biggest strengths, and I can help students with anything from 5 paragraph essays to academic writing assignments. I enjoy editing, and throughout my college career I have edited dozens of essays for friends. I have also taken multiple classes in phonetics and phonology for my major, which will be useful for any student who is struggling with reading or pronunciation, or students who are learning English. As you can see on my profile, I am qualified in a number of subjects.

Please feel free to send me messages with any questions, and I'll respond right away! I'm available to tutor immediately and have a pretty open schedule this summer. Thanks for reading.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
