About Eric

Students often compliment me on my sense of humor. Fellow teachers say that my high school classes feel like a college classroom. I strive to combine fun and rigor while teaching. I thoroughly enjoy the priviledge and try to impart an understanding of a subject as well as an enthusiasm for that subject. Like Aristotle, my hero, I seek expertise in many branches of knowledge. My philosophy is his, that "all people by nature desire to know." I could not disagree more Francis Bacon that "knowledge is power."

I have had the distinct pleasure of seeing many of my former students go on to become teachers themselves. In 2003, I co-founded the Lyceum school in Cleveland. Students there have all classes around a table and participate in Socratic style discussions instead of simply hearing lectures. I selected the teachers, recruited parents and students, and wrote the general curriculum.

I taught Algebra, Geometry, PreCalculus, Latin, History, and English over the course of my 5 years at Trivium school where we one tied for highest average English SAT score in the nation. I then went on to get my M.A. in Ancient Greek and Roman Studies, with a concentration in Latin. There I was an Ancient Greek History TA where I organized class debates, occasionally lectured, and helped college students brainstorm and research their papers. I now teach Science at a private high school. I am licensed by the state of MA in History and Earth Science for grades 5-12.

I have been tutoring part-time since 2006. Though I tutor mostly for the SAT, I also tutor quite a bit of pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Latin.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Making learning fun is essential for all teaching, but especially in grade school as it may set the tone for the rest of a student's entire education. That's a talent of mine. The oldest of six children, I've been caring for and teaching young people since childhood. I have worked for a private tutoring company with children in grades 3-6 for 7 years.

Grammar

I have taught English composition to grades 8,9, and 10 and taught Latin I&II. All of these courses had a strong grammar component. Grammar is essential for studying inflected languages like Greek and Latin, in which noun and adjective forms change depending on their function in the sentence.

Philosophy

I am a former substitute philosophy professor at Clark University. Ancient philosophy is my forte, especially Aristotle.

Political Science

I taught 8th grade American Government at Trivium School. I did my senior thesis on Political Rhetoric. In the Great Books program at Thomas Aquinas College I read all the major political works like Machiavelli's Prince, Aristotle's Politics, Aquinas' On Kingship, Plato's Republic, De Toqueville's Democracy in America, The Federalist Papers, Hobbes' Leviathon, Locke's Second Treatise on government, and Thucydides' Peloponnesean War. I also have practical experience in politics as I've been paid staff for four campaigns. I follow political news like some guys follow sports news.

Vocabulary

My advanced knowledge of Latin and intermediate knowledge of ancient Greek make me uniquely suited to explain the etymology of English vocabulary. This provides the best way to remember, knowing what the parts of a word mean.

Knowledgeable and Personable

Eric really helped my daughter gain a better understanding of the Latin language, and introduced some other study skills that will get her to absorb the endless vocabulary she needs to know. He is patient and fun to work with. She feels a lot more confident now thanks to Eric!
