About Nancy

Art has always been a happy combination of creativity and imagination for me. It led me from art school to college to teaching all forms of art methods to pre-school, elementary and middle school students, as well as mixed age groups in arts camp. Integrating the arts into the classroom curriculum is a specialty of mine, and my MEd focused on just that. I also have a BS in Applied Art from Northeastern University.

What I love about teaching art is providing an idea, materials and a method of art-making, a short demonstration, and then stepping back to see where a young artist takes it. I am happy to guide and encourage, but am consistently impressed with the creative outcome from each individual's personal interpretation of the idea.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with students of all ages. Art is work, but the kind of work that stretches creativity. Practice in small homework assignments is encouraged. My goal in teaching is to create a fun atmosphere of learning and success. Lessons can be scheduled to accommodate school and activity obligations.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

My educational background is in art, and in art school, college and graduate school I have studied drawing in many media: pencil, charcoal, pastels, ink and colored pencils. Through my years of teaching Pre-K to high school students, I have focused on drawing as a basic skill that helps students learn to look closely at their world. From simple drawings of shapes and lines to more advanced studies of form, light and shadow, drawing allows a range of expression of mood, emotion and personal creativity.

Painting

I have studied acrylic painting at the Boston Center for Adult Education and the Eliot School, and watercolor and oil painting at the Art Complex Museum. I have taught painting to all ages of children throughout my twenty-seven year teaching career in schools and arts camp. Painting, both with realistic and abstract subjects, is a great way to explore composition, color and color-mixing. With the use of light and shadow, amazing results are possible. Emotion, mood and representations of the world are fun to paint.
