About Richard

Bio

I am a retired educator, experienced tutor and published author of magazine articles and three books. Part of successful tutoring is establishing a personal connection, building a student's confidence and encouraging him/her to succeed. Tutoring allows learning to be tailored to the individual student. When tutoring, I learn about the student's interests and learning style. I use that knowledge to make connections between the subject and personal experience.

Successful tutoring overcomes learning obstacles that cannot be addressed in the classroom setting. Personal attention, and crafting the teaching approach to the individual, allows learning to move at a rapid pace. I get great satisfaction from watching the growth in a student's confidence, skills and learning achievements.

I have experience as an SAT Reading and Writing tutor. I believe that there are testing skills the can be taught and that practice taking tests helps with test experience and comfort. I am the published author of two "Wellfleet Tales" books, a novel, "Murder at Bound Brook" and magazine articles (Cape Cod LIFE magazine). I enjoy helping students master the craft of writing essays and research papers.

I taught 8th-grade American History and majored in Political Science. I am also an avid history "buff" and read extensively in American and World History. I took the SAT American History test and scored 800.

In addition to my love of teaching, I love the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins. I coached soccer, baseball and basketball. I love to read, play a smidgen of acoustic guitar, and like golf and skiing.

SAT Writing

I am an experienced SAT writing tutor and was trained by a national company. To qualify I had to achieve a high SAT score (above 700). I am a writer of over thirty short stories that have been published online or in print publication and am currently completing a mystery novel. My approach to tutoring is to make a connection with the student. We learn by connecting new knowledge with prior knowledge. If I can tap into the student's interests and background they will understand and remember what they are being taught.

Helpful, Understanding, Patient and great Teacher

Richard was one of the best tutors I have had in all of my years of schooling. He was patient and taught me the right way how to develop and structure a well written essay. I would highly advise to pick him the next time you are contemplating about getting a tutor for some extra help!

Boy did we get lucky!

I can't say enough good things about Richard. He was a perfect fit for my teenage son. Richard's involvement and support gave my son the extra push and confidence he needed to get him through a difficult writing project. We were amazed at how quickly Richard was able to jump in and get the ball rolling. My son truly enjoyed working with this incredible guy. Richard is brilliant, down to earth and he really knows how to engage his student. We will be reaching out to him again for sure. Having a teaching job does not make one a teacher. It takes a gift. Richard truly has that gift!

Very Helpful

Richard spent the first meeting getting to know my son and going over the process with which he would help strengthen his writing abilities. He uses many tools and organizational ideas to help one understand how to organize their thoughts and get them on paper. My son really enjoyed working with him. We will definitely continue.

Very keen and intuitive

Rick seems to be very keen on my son's needs and intuitive on how he learns or what he lacks. I look forward to seeing improvement for my son which will build his confidence.

Very helpful

Richard has been tutoring my daughter for a few months. My daughter and I are very happy with him. He has been very helpful preparing her for her SAT test and addressing her individual weakness. As a parent, I am very happy to receive regular updates regarding her progress. He is very approachable and my daughter feels much more confident due to his help. We recently decided that Richard could help her prepare for the AP History exam. I wish we had hired him before.

Making Connections

Richard works well with students by finding out their interests and creating curriculum related to their interests. Additionally, he knows the material he's expected to teach.
