About Richard

I am a retired teacher, principal and SAT tutor. Part of successful tutoring is establishing a personal connection, building a student's confidence and encouraging him or her to succeed. Tutoring allows learning to be tailored to the individual student. When tutoring, I learn about the student's interests and learning style. I use that knowledge to make connections between the subject and personal experience.

Successful tutoring overcomes learning obstacles that cannot be addressed in the classroom setting. Personal attention, and crafting the teaching approach to the individual, allows learning to move at a rapid pace. I get great satisfaction from watching the growth in a student's confidence, skills and learning achievements.

I have experience as an SAT Reading and Writing tutor. The prerequisite was for me to obtain a high score on the SAT verbal exam (700+). I believe that there are testing skills the can be taught and that practice taking tests helps with test experience and comfort. I am also the published author of a book, "Wellfleet Tales" and magazine short stories.

I taught 8th-grade American History and majored in Political Science. I am also an avid history "buff" and read extensively in American and World History. I took the SAT American History test and scored 800.

In addition to my love of teaching, I love the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins. I coached soccer, baseball and basketball. I love to read, play a smidgen of acoustic guitar, and like golf and skiing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SAT Writing

I am an experienced SAT writing tutor and was trained by a national company. To qualify I had to achieve a high SAT score (above 700). I am a writer of over thirty short stories that have been published online or in print publication and am currently completing a mystery novel.

My approach to tutoring is to make a connection with the student. We learn by connecting new knowledge with prior knowledge. If I can tap into the student's interests and background they will understand and remember what they are being taught.

Boy did we get lucky! — I can't say enough good things about Richard. He was a perfect fit for my teenage son. Richard's involvement and support gave my son the extra push and confidence he needed to get him through a difficult writing project. We were amazed at how quickly Richard was able to jump in and get the ball rolling. My son truly enjoyed working with this incredible guy. Richard is brilliant, down to eart ...
