About Edythe

Bio

The more I tutor, the more I believe that everyone has something to teach and something to learn. I learn from my students how to teach them. I went to college during The Sixties and bring the passion of that period to each tutoring session. With careers in newspaper copyediting and computer programming, I can help you with your writing or your math. I love beating the system and will show you how to conquer the SAT. I owe alot to my Maker and love to share what I've learned from His Word.

Grammar,

Grammar

I'm the grammar queen, having been a newspaper copy editor for 10 years. I try to relate the subject to the way we talk and text and often treat standard English as a foreign language. My motto: if it sounds weird, it's probably right.

Study Skills

Study Skills

I have helped students with their study skills by showing them how to (step by step) manage their time, prepare for a test, take notes, and write research papers. An important part of this process is listening to students vent about their frustrations in this area and then responding with practicals. For example, when a student says he/she can't study at night because everyone else at home is watching TV, I suggest going to the library or a friend's house or using ear plugs.

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

The revised SAT has added multiple-choice questions about graphics that are included with some passages and about location of evidence in a passage to justify a previous answer. Still present are answer choices that go a step too far or a step too little as well as mix up information from paired passages. I can help with all of this so the test doesn't take you as you take it.

Bible Studies

I have belonged to a Bible-based congregation for over 30 years and teach Sunday school every summer. I can help students with no Bible experience make sense of biblical references in literature and historical documents they encounter in class and on the SAT or ACT.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is the portal to higher math in high school and college. I see the subject as a seesaw and a riddle. It's a balancing act for equations and a math sentence setup for expressions. I try to make it fun.
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry is my favorite math subject, because it's so practical. More importantly, it can be integrated with algebra to make equations make more sense. I treat geometric proofs as if they are a kind of MapQuest from the givens to the end statement. Mostly I try to make the whole process fun by relating it to a student's interests (sports, music, nature, art, etc).
SAT Math,

SAT Math

When I do SAT tutoring for members of my church, I only charge if scores go up. So far, I've (pretty much) always been paid.

Sports/Recreation

Chess,

Chess

I help people learn or improve in chess by playing with them and talking about each move -- mine and theirs. Chess is a process that involves psychology of the opponent so I get them to be aware of what I'm doing so they can thwart me. I like to play 3-person chess, which forces you to "own" both sides of the board.
Sewing

Sewing

I'm the best hand-sewer you'll probably ever meet, because there are not many of us left. I can show you how to hem, mend, take in, let out, and decorate your wardrobe. For machine sewing, see someone else.

Edythe is wonderful!

My daughter called Edythe to tell her she was really nervous about the SAT test in the morning and she took the time to settle her down and talked strategies. Thank you for being so thoughtful!

Excellent Tutor

She's an excellent tutor. I learned everything she thought me, she's very patient, and has an special way to teach.

Melquezedeque, 2 lessons with Edythe

Perseverance and patience

Edythe worked very hard to develop a working relationship with a less than receptive student. Together they worked on getting a handle on setting realistic goals

Good homework assignments, student specific

One thing that Edythe did that was helpful for me was to give me homework that is specific to me: she told me to write down the rules, in a way that will help me, rather than only referring to the textbook.

Cassandra, 1 lesson with Edythe

Kind, smart, nice and helpful

I worked with Edy on my math (volume and area), science (vertebrates and invertebrates), and reading. She was good to work with. Supportive and made learning easier for me.

The Best I've Seen

Edythe is fantastic. She tutors my 7 year old son in math every Saturday. He thoroughly enjoys her and the way she tutors. She makes it fun and he has really improved his math skills as a result of Edythe's tutoring. I would highly recommend Edythe to anyone who has children in need of tutoring. She's great.

Excellent tutor.

Edythe is doing a great job with my daughter. She is very patient with her and is helpful and encouraging. I have already seen her grades going up in all her subjects! WE REALLY APPRECIATE ALL EDYTHE'S HARD WORK! She has made a huge difference in a very short time and I look forward to her continued support in my daughter academic success.
