About Valerie

I am a Ph.D. in anthropology and have taught college students since 1993 in various institutions and contexts including the School for International Training and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. My present position is an administrative one but what I love more than anything is seeing students "get it" and grow through education. Truly, I believe that life is enhanced by understanding. I want to do what I can to help facilitate that understanding.

I teach Anthropology, English, and am an experienced worker with Special Needs. I am patient and supportive, and believe in the power of gentle pushes grounded in a firm belief that people can do more than they think they can do.

Having written my dissertation and an article published in an anthropology journal, I have the demonstrated skills to be of assistance to students of anthropology. More than that, I am a keen observer of culture and have the ability to see underlying patterns, which lead to strong analyses of social behaviors.

I am highly skilled in public speaking, vocabulary and writing because of my work over the years as a trainer, teacher and writer. I am presently working on turning my dissertation into a book and so I am highly attuned (especially now) to issues around vocabulary and writing. However, this doesn't mean that I'm interested only in working with college students! I can work with anyone!

One of my first jobs, years ago, was with Special Needs individuals at Camp Catskill in Liberty, New York and since then, off and on, I worked with Special Needs children and adults. I have a deep patience and appreciation for Special Needs folks and that makes me an excellent tutor for that group of people.

I look forward to hearing from you and exploring whether we think we are a good match for each other. Please feel free to contact me to chat.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a MA in Anthropology (2008) and a Ph.D. in Anthropology (2015). I have served as a teaching assistant for three different Anthropology classes and taught an online course in Medical Anthropology.
