Smith College (English)
American International College (MEd)
I began tutoring writing in the ESL Learning Lab at my community college and I loved it so much I decided to switch my major from art to English. I earned a BA in English from Smith College and an M.Ed in Education at American International College. As an undergrad I worked in the Jacobson Writing Center matching tutors with students and scheduling appointments. After graduation I returned to work as an English teacher and professional tutor at the community college where I began my own college education. Since then I have worked in campus student support centers and private tutoring settings with students ranging in age from 9 years to older adult, assisting with reading, writing papers, research, literary analysis and exam preparation.
I love tutoring because it provides an opportunity to get to know the individual student--learning style, educational experiences, cultural background and knowledge of the subject. The one-on-one setting allows for a type of communication that leads to new discoveries and increased self-confidence. It's wonderful to make a difference in a student's life, whether it's writing a successful paper, passing a difficult course with a high grade, finding the keys to understanding and enjoying a poem or story, or creating a dynamic research paper.
I have been speaking to large groups as a classroom teacher for many years and I have become adept at assessing listener involvement, facilitating discussion, and presenting the topic in a clear manner, using whiteboards, visuals and audience participation. I also know how to use humor and surprise to "rev up" a presentation.
I have extensive experience helping students with writing in all subjects from composition and literature to science, history and social studies. My range of experience can provide you with the tools you need to reach your highest potential. My personal background is bi-cultural and bilingual and I have tutored students from all over the world with very positive results. I would be happy to meet with you to speak in person and discuss schedules. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BA in English from Smith College, a Master's Degree in Education (grades 8-12) and 15+ years teaching and tutoring experience in English Composition, reading, writing and literature with middle school, high school and college students. I can also help students make class presentations.
I have a master's degree in education and over 15 years experience as a classroom teacher delivering information and facilitating group discussions. As a teacher of literature I have taught students how to make successful presentations to a class and grade each others' presentations using specific criteria. I help students with strategies to engage audience interest and create a dynamic speech through by thoroughly researching the subject, using notes effectively, maintaining eye contact, utilizing visual aids and handouts, and responding to questions. I help students to become well-informed about a subject, prepare notes, visuals and handouts, and practice in advance for a speech.
I have taught writing in high school and college classrooms, tutoring labs and private tutoring situations. I am very patient and student-centered.
