I have recently completed my Master's Degree in Japanese at University of Massachusetts Amherst. My fields of interest are Japanese pedagogy and technology in the classroom. I have studied the language for well over 10 years, both as part of my undergraduate program and as an independent learner. I am currently working toward the JLPT N1 and ACTFL's OPI at the advanced level.

I have studied the language for well over 10 years, both as part of my undergraduate program and as an independent learner. I am currently working toward the JLPT N1 and ACTFL's OPI at the advanced level.

I started tutoring Japanese about 8 years ago, at the campus Tutoring Center of SUNY New Paltz. I soon thereafter started tutoring ESL and writing. I discovered that I like to help students find their own inner strength and guide them toward a path of academic success. I hope to one day become a Japanese teacher at the high school level.

After graduation I continued to work at the Tutoring Center in a professional capacity. I lead the weekly tutor training program and helped tutors devise tutoring strategies to help students improve their study skills.

I am a native speaker of the English language, and I have studied a wide array of foreign languages myself (Japanese, French), which helps me understand where their frustrations may lie. I have helped Chinese speaking students of English in the past; one student for 3 years.

Japanese

I began my studies in Japanese independently in 2006. Starting in 2008 I began taking Japanese courses at SUNY New Paltz followed by 10 months studying in Kanazawa, Japan between Fall 2010 and Spring 2011. After graduating, I have continued my studies independently and strived to perfect my ability. Currently enrolled in the Japanese graduate program UMass Amherst, focusing on Japanese Pedagogy and Teaching Methods.

As part of my duties as a graduate assistant, I will often meet with students to help them improve their writing. Many of the students I have helped are freshmen or sophomores who are new to writing papers at the college level. I have also worked with students who need remedial help because of learning disabilities and, I have a background as an ESL tutor, which allows me to help students whose first language is not English as well.

Down to earth. Easy to relate to.

David is very nice and extremely easy to speak with, he is great for beginners, and I enjoy his style of teaching. He made it very easy for me to follow along and is very patient. He gave me realistic expectations and timelines that I am really comfortable with

Exceeded expectations

My daughter felt at ease and she definitely related well to David. His lesson was designed to meet her specific learning needs. She can't wait for the next session.

The best tutor I've ever had

David is very patient and kind and we have developed a great student/teacher relationship. I have learned SO much about the Japanese language from him and just today we took a break from the usual and did a calligraphy lesson. He is very knowledgeable about the Japanese culture and knows what he's talking about. He hardly ever uses the teacher's textbook and rather teaches from his own head. I recommend him completely if you're interested in learning the Japanese language. He's not simply a tutor; he's a friend.
