About David

My studies in Japanese began independently in 2007 and I started Japanese courses in 2008 at SUNY New Paltz. After 2 years of straight A's in Japanese, I was accepted into Kanazawa University's exclusive KUSEP program. From October 2010 until August 2011, I lived and studied in Japan’s Hokuriku region. After graduating, I have continued my studies and strive to perfect my ability. I am currently preparing for the Japan Foundation's Japanese Language Proficiency Test at its highest level (N1) and an ACTFL's Oral Proficiency Interview, with my sights set at the Advanced-High rank.

During my undergraduate studies at SUNY New Paltz, I also earned a Level 1 certificate from the internationally recognized College Reading and Learning Association. Through the program's 10 hour training course I learned strategies to help untraditional students, cross-cultural barriers and other aspects of tutoring which I hadn’t before considered. Tutoring at SUNY New Paltz has given me the unique opportunity to work with a wide variety of students, from those with learning disabilities to gifted students.

Today I work as the Tutoring Center Coordinator's Assistant, where help tutors optimize their performance every day. In my personal commitment to excellence I am constantly improving upon our already formidable tutor training course, maintaining a database of study skills and academic resources as well as cultivating an atmosphere of community between our peer tutors and students. I pride myself on adaptability, an indefatigably cheerful nature and hard-held belief that human potential is limitless.

I have testimonials on another site, for which I can provide a link.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am a native speaker of the English language, and I have studied a wide array of foreign languages myself (Japanese, French), which helps me understand where their frustrations may lie. I have helped Chinese speaking students of English in the past; one student for 3 years.

Study Skills

I am a certified CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) level 1 tutor through SUNY New Paltz. Training includes at least 25 hours of active training, and 10 hours of mandatory training.

As the current Assistant to the Tutoring Center Coordinator of SUNY New Paltz, one of my duties is to create training modules which include strategies for study, organization and scheduling which can be used across a wide range of disciplines.

These are meant to help students discover their strengths and bolster their weaknesses in order to achieve academic success.
