I am bilingual in Spanish and English. My Bachelor's Degree is in Spanish, and graduated Summa Cum Laude; I lived and studied in both Mexico and Spain and have traveled extensively elsewhere in Latin America.
I recently graduated in May 2013 with a Master's in Education, ESL, and completed my practicum last fall in a self-containted High School ESL classroom (for the most intensive ESL teaching experience possible).
I hold a dual MA teachers license in ESL and Spanish, secondary education level. This can include college and adult level students as well.
I am a member of MATSOL and TESOL Professional Organizations - means I take this field seriously and read the latest research
I have had 12+ years of experience in ESL and Sheltered Immersion Instruction and teaching Spanish to non-native speakers and native speakers alike reading and writing for the latter.
I have many years of experience as a Marketing Business Professional before entering education. This means I could help you communicate better with your Spanish speaking employees OR help them communicate better with you in English!
I have been 'CORI'ed many times for different schools, or different professional or volunteer positions - this means that I have passed the Department of Justice background checks.
I have successfully completed all Massachusetts ESL Category training courses 2-4 (including MELA-O), as well as the new WIDA programs for MA licensure.
My previous career was in the international biotech-pharmaceutical industry for 15 years, as international marketing and business development.
I have a Master's in International Management from Thunderbird Graduate School of International Business.
My approach to tutoring would be based upon a 'Needs Assessment' which I would do at our first meeting. Together with becoming acquainted, I would want to know what your ultimate goals for learning and tutoring are so that I can focus my lesson planning accordingly. If it is to read, then we will spend most of our time on that skill. If it is being able to speak, then I will focus on oral language, including word choice, idioms, pronunciation, grammar and pragmatics. I have many games and fun activities for children and adults alike to make learning more engaging. I can also tutor business executives and other professionals, tailoring the lessons to a particular field or industry. I am bilingual in Spanish and English. If students schedule more than one session per week, the rate will drop to $35 per session. If there are 2 or more in a group, that rate will be $20 each per hour.
We use Carol as a Spanish teacher, not a tutor. Our son's Spanish had atrophied due to some time away from studying the language. She quickly and effectively assessed what level he is at and developed a flexible yet effective strategy. She has created effective homework assignments that have helped him to recover his knowledge. She is incredibly patient throughout each lesson, and greets his progress with support, not fake enthusiasm -- real pleasure at seeing him progress. We're thrilled to have found her.
Carol was a great find. My kid was not confident in English but Carol came up with multiple approaches to get her started. She has been patient, punctual and makes sure the sessions are fun. My kid has made significant progress in English and I attribute a lot of that to Carol.I would recommend Carol for any ESL student without any reservations.
Carol is a very well qualified Spanish tutor. She takes the time to explain subtle differences of the Spanish language. My son is feeling better about his Spanish class and looks forward to proving to his middle school teacher that he really does know Spanish!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have now graduated with a Masters Degree in Education, ESL and am licensed in both ESL and Spanish. I have over 14 years of experience teaching ESL and Spanish to students of all ages, but have specialised my license for the secondary level (middle, high school, college and adults). I have a wide variety of teaching materials, including standard text books and work books used in public and private schools, and creativity galore to supplement those!
I am a member of MATSOL and TESOL Professional Organizations. I successfully completed all Massachusetts ESL Category training courses 2-4 (including MELA-O) and recently taken the WIDA training courses (academically focused ESL curricula required in MA).
I am now licensed in the state of Massachusetts to teach Spanish.
Fluent in Spanish: reading, writing, speaking and listening. I lived and studied in Mexico for 6 months in high school (senior year) and lived and studied in Spain for 1 year in college. My undergraduate degree is in Spanish - and I graduated summa cum laude with a GPA of 3.9 (on 4.0 scale). I also took several graduate level Spanish classes as part of my Master's in International Management as well as afterward, simply because I wanted to. I have been teaching Spanish to students of all ages since 2000, including reading and writing to native Spanish speakers. I have collected a wide variety of text and work books used within school systems, as well as a list of suggested websites useful in supplementing Spanish language learning. If that is not enough, I am very creative and can come up with fun lessons to make sure my students are engaged at all times!
I have been an excellent student throughout my school years. This includes grade school to high school, as well as undergraduate school where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.95/4.0 GPA as well as several academic awards and Who's Who nominations. I did this while taking 6 classes per semester, working as News Editor of the student weekly paper, and President of International Language Society and Foreign Student Association. I mention this because my ability to successfully juggle many things and study efficiently. I have earned my Masters degree in International Management with a 3.7 GPA and have finished my coursework for my Masters in Education with mostly all A's (1 B). I am super organized at studying and taking notes and organizing work flow. I love to teach this skill to others. I also am efficient at time management and have many tools in my arsenal to help accomplish this. As a Product/Project Marketing manager, I developed these skills after many time management and project management courses and loads of experience.
