Bio

Here's some quick background info: I'm a theoretical physicist that works in string theory and black holes. I am currently on break from a visiting fellowship at Peking University (in Beijing, China). Currently, I spend my time wandering Harvard's Jefferson Lab and MIT's CTP talking physics with past colleagues/professors until it's time for me to fly back to China. I also tutor on the side and have done so for over 8 years.

I love physics and math, and teaching students to understand and appreciate the esoteric complexity and elegant simplicity behind both subjects gives me great satisfaction. In addition to these subjects, I can also tutor a variety of other courses, especially those involving philosophy or linguistics, where my love for argument and language manifests itself quite clearly. I also love billiards/pool, but I doubt too many people are looking for tutoring in that.

I have literally been doing math my whole life (and have tutored it for much of that life). I received my B.S. in math (and another in physics) at MIT (where it is called course 18). I currently work in theoretical physics (a field which demands a high competency in math). Granted, being good at something doesn't mean one is good at teaching it, but it certainly helps. My focus is always on understanding as opposed to just rote memorization of techniques and problem-solving methods. Although this can sometimes frustrate a student just wanting an answer, it always pays off in the end.

I have based my life and career in physics. If there is one thing in life I am good at, it is physics (and math). I can't imagine anything cooler than trying to understand reality, and that's exactly what physics is: rigorous exploration and analysis of one's reality. If that doesn't get the hair on the back of your neck to stand up, I don't know what will. Many students think physics is too difficult for them and just not their subject, but I refuse to accept that. Underlying physics and all its apparent complications is a beautiful simplicity that no other science can match; and as a tutor, it is my responsibility (and one I take on with zeal) to lead students to this realization.

Additionally, I have always had a passion for language. This coupled with my predilection for logic naturally led me to grammar. I take actual enjoyment in parsing a sentence and diagramming the syntax used. As a grammar tutor, I think the most important thing is to dispel the notion that grammar is a byzantine agglomeration of rules and reveal the logic underneath it all. Once this is done, detecting (and writing with) correct grammar becomes almost second-nature.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I look forward to hearing from you.

Great session

The student was very happy with the extent of the material covered. Pertinent details, clarification and succinct review achieved. Looking forward to the next one.

Help with AP physics C

Eric has an in-depth understanding of physics that has made him great at explaining concepts, not just algorithms. He’s great to work with!

Great Help

He is a wonderful teacher, very patient to student. Highly Recommend.

Knowledgeable tutor. Good teaching style.

Session was on calculus based physics. Able to communicate the essentials of the material, but also helped convey the real world aspects of the subject. Most flexible on timing and venue of lesson.

Knowledgeable and Efficient.

Eric came in with short notice from me and really helped me feel confident going into my exam the next day. He had a great way of uncomplicating the way I thought about physics. I will definitely be using his services again!

Physics

Eric is an excellent physics tutor. He is very knowledgeable and is great at tesching. My daughter missed an entire week of school due to illness and after tutoring with him, she has caught up perfectly.

Prompt and thorough

My son was able to understand his errors on his physics test through Eric's tutoring. My son feels more confident now in taking the Physics MCAS. Eric was prompt and friendly and put my son at ease. My son enjoyed working with Eric.
