Houston Baptist Univeristy (Music Education)
I home schooled my daughter from junior high through high school. She graduated with high honors for her Associates and is attending a private college in Boston to finish her degree.
I also have taught piano, music theory, ear-training and voice to children and adults. I have taught in a school setting and privately out of my home. I enjoy watching the progress as students learn and feel a sense of accomplishment from their efforts. I also let them move at their own pace while encouraging them to be disciplined and to ask any questions they may have.
I have good experience and background in writing and to that end, my child learned how to write successful papers and graduate cum laude in Journalism and Communications.
I worked for a publishing company for many years and wrote letters on behalf of the editor in response to readers. I was a good proofreader and contributor as well. I understand the importance of congruity and sound thinking in writing, in properly structured sentences, and proofing the work thoroughly to be sure the final copy is effective in delivering it's message.
I studied music since a child and have also taught many children how to read music and sing by sight. I studied Music Education and Piano with a minor in Voice in college. I am able to teach others how to utilize these abilities and be able to continue independently as they grow in their knowledge.
I really enjoy the teacher/student relationship and try to make learning fun. To learn to value the importance of education to the point where one can propel themselves forward is my main goal in providing services. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I studied piano from a very young age and was taught by my mother who graduated from Julliard. I completed over three years study in college during which time I made As in every study of music including piano, which was my major. I later taught piano to children as well as adults for several years.
I have also played church hymns in different churches and been the sole musician at times, leading the congregation in song.
I am able to sight-read and sing and play at the same time. I taught my daughter to play as well, and she was playing songs with chords and melody quite well by age 7.
I also compose and write my own music and have performed my pieces in church settings on many occasions.
I have worked as a proofreader for editors and it also has been a requirement in a majority of the positions I have held.
I have taught sight-singing to several students in the past. I participated in choir in school from elementary school through college. I took voice and piano lessons from an early age through college and beyond.
I have written for publications as well as worked for publishers and edited their work and answered correspondence for them in the past.
