In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

The test is very much centered on proper English usage, so if you can teach the rules of grammar and the exceptions, it's easier to feel confident. As a part of my own college education as a journalism major at Syracuse University, I studied public speaking as a part of the television, radio, film program. As a journalist, I was a member of the Speaker's Bureau at The Eagle-Tribune. Now in my role as a teacher, I work with students on public speaking through my journalism class, as well as in all ELA classes where public presentation is a requirement.

As a teacher, I have had the training and the experience to differentiate the learning and tailor work to the specific needs of these students.
