About T.J.

I relish the challenge of tutoring the underachieving student.

Usually these students begin to come out of the woodwork in middle school. Typically they are very bright students who have breezed through their academic lives with little effort, and then they hit a wall. Whap!

Whether it is 7th, 8th, 9th grade or beyond, they are often bemused as to the source of their shortcomings. In their minds, they haven’t changed a thing in their approach to school, so it must be someone else’s fault. When confronting their previous achievers, parents of underachieving students often get responses such as, “I don’t get it!” or, “The tests s/he gives are just so unfair!” and the infamous, “That teacher just doesn’t like me!”

In reality these students have just never been taught how to study. Because they are innately intelligent they were able to perform very well at younger grades and didn’t require any extra attention from their teacher. They were never taught any of the tricks of the trade which, though seemingly tedious, mark the difference between Honor Roll and Infamy.

What I teach are study skills: Note taking, organization, test preparation, time management. These are tangible, useful, applicable skills which cross curricular boundaries and help all struggling students succeed in all subjects.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

COOP/HSPT

For the past three years I have been preparing students to take middle- and high-school entrance exams such as the ISEE, COOP/HSPT and SSAT. The students I have tutored have had various ability levels, as well as several with special considerations such as ADHD and other learning issues. All students have met with success. I take an approach of demystifying the process for the students while helping them with specific test-taking strategies. In addition I help students with their mental approach to the test.

Public Speaking

I have been an active public speaker for nearly 25 years. I was a member of the University of Rochester Debating Union for two semesters, and was formally trained in Speech and Debate there. Specifically, I trained and competed in Non-Policy Debating and participated in the 1995 Cross Examination Debate Association Novice National Championships.

Social Studies

I have been teaching Middle School Social Studies for over a decade now. I have an undergraduate degree in History from Fordham University. I am licensed to teach Social Studies by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Special Needs

I have been teaching in a mainstream educational setting for over 13 years, in close conjunction with our special needs staff. Not only am I on a teaching team which includes a Special Needs teacher, I actively participate in IEP meetings for our students. I have assisted the Special Needs staff in my classroom to modify the curriculum for my special needs students. Finally, I currently work on a team which includes three Social Studies and three Special Needs teachers in developing curriculum for the 8th grade.

Study Skills

For over a decade I have made teaching Study Skills an important part of teaching Social Studies. I also have several years of summer school teaching experience, both in Social Studies and English Language Arts. I have found that no matter what subject you are teaching in summer school, the most important aspect is improving the student's study skills so that they can avoid failure in the future.

Fantastic fit — T.J. is a perfect fit for my daughter! As she said, "He read my needs so quickly and accurately. I'm psyched to work with him." T.J. is patient, flexible, upbeat, and brings a great strategic perspective and breadth of experience to the table. We are looking forward to a positive and productive relationship with him. ...
