About Catherine

I have 26 years experience teaching at the elementary level. I began my career as a third and fourth grade teacher. I then received my masters degree in special education and throughout the years taught special needs at grade levels one through six. I also spent two years teaching in a life skills classroom. Most recently I have been teaching special needs in grades two and three. My strength is teaching children with language learning disabilities and reading disabilities. Many other challenges are often associated with learning disabilities, such as ADD. I have developed strategies to motivate children with multiple challenges.
The Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction, is sequential, systematic and multi-sensory. It was specially designed for teaching dyslexics, but works well with many types readers. Your child will be starting instruction based on a quick assessment that will inform me the most foundational skill your child needs. Each lesson then builds based on your child's rate of learning new skills.

My Orton-Gillingham certification involved 100 hours of tutoring experience during which I was supervised by an Orton-Gillinham specialist. I also spent 45 class hours being instructed in methods and materials. Orton-Gillingham follows a specific lesson plan that is delivered with the same scientifically based instruction each lesson.

Being a parent of a child struggling with reading can be difficult. The demands on your time and patience are great. I can help you gain a greater understanding of your child, while tutoring your child in the most effective reading instruction available.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
