I am a scientist at the UMass Med School where I do research on the development of high-fidelity genome editing tools to be used in correcting several inherent genetic diseases. I have obtained my Ph.D. from the same university but working on entirely different problems (mechanism of specificity of certain cyclin-CDKs). I did Master's in Biochemistry and my Undergrad major was Chemistry with almost equal focus on Physics and Maths. My highly diverse background has helped me a lot in my research and sharpened my analytical skills. I want to bring the same to my students such that they always have the curiosity to ask questions. There is no better way of learning anything than by asking all that occurs to you about the subject. This will ultimately lead to develop the student's "out of the box" thinking and make him into a deeply reflecting and evidence-driven person. These qualities will not only make them stand out in a group, but also make them better professionals in whatever they choose to pursue in future.
I will chalk out a individual plan for each student depending on his/her learning ability and interest and constantly update that with progress. I will urge the student to always think and not simply learn-by-heart and finish the course. Students who are willing to not simply be limited by their textbooks but learn about cutting edge science in Biology and Chemistry are going to benefit immensely from interacting with me. Those who want to simply finish the course can still learn it in a much more interesting way with realistic examples. Being in the UMass system, I have observed that several students actually learn much more about science when then do short research internships at one of our over 300 labs. Since, I know almost everybody that is a researcher of some repute in this school, I can help my students join a lab based on their interest area and get some hands-on experience. These short term internships (although mostly non-paid) come with the added advantage of getting recommendations from reputed scientist for college. I can assure that learning with me will let the student broaden his thought process and become deeply analytical. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
