About Rebecca

I am a passionate music educator with a love for learning, exploration, and making mistakes. One of the best things about music is its vastness - you can never know enough about it, and there's no such thing as "getting it right." Music is both objectively universal and subjectively personal. Everyone experiences it slightly differently. My goal as a music teacher is to lead my students towards a deeper love for and understanding of how music works; that is, the "why" of the art.

My training is primarily in classical instrumental music, but I have studied other genres and venues (such as jazz, rock, and folk) throughout the course of my schooling and career. I offer a great deal of knowledge in the fields of music theory and clarinet technique, and my skills in other areas are well-developed.

I prefer to structure lessons based on the subject and goal of each session. I expect students to come in with an idea of what they would like to accomplish, and from that foundation I am able to build a process that is well-suited to each individual. Often, homework will come more in the form of practicing or experimenting, as I am not in the business of assigning busywork. I am currently in the process of completing an independent study in clarinet pedagogy.

I can help you with Clarinet, Composition, Ear Training, General Music, Instrumental Music, Choral Music, Music Theory, Music History.

Please feel free to contact me to learn more about the lessons I can offer and to schedule tutoring sessions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Clarinet

I have studied clarinet intensively for the past four years at Gordon College under the tutelage of Boston clarinetist William Kirkley. Repertoire studied ranges from Mozart's Clarinet Concerto to Poulenc's Clarinet Sonata to Stravinsky's Three Pieces for Clarinet, and many more. I have given two duet recitals, and my studies culminated in a senior recital, which comprised of 50 minutes of quality repertoire. I have also been involved in various ensembles such as the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and various chamber ensembles. I am currently in the process of completing an independent study in clarinet pedagogy.

Composition (Music)

Throughout college, I have been a member of my school's Composer's Guild and have taken advantage of as many composition classes as possible. I composed incidental music for the school's production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" and have arranged pieces for various worship events on campus. I am a winner of the December 2014 installment of the Composer's Voice "15 Minutes of Fame" series and had my solo clarinet composition premiered in New York City. I am also the recipient of an Honorable Mention from the Iowa Composer's Forum Annual Competition for my piece, "Three Moods for Trumpet and Piano." I am proficient in Sibelius and capable of using other notation software, and I am familiar with most DAWs and other recording software.

Ear Training

I passed all ear training courses in college with a grade of A- or higher. Throughout my studies in music, I have intentionally developed my ear and I am now quite skilled at dictation, sight-singing, and hearing melodic and harmonic intervals. I have a good sense of relative pitch and I am equipped with many techniques and processes through which to teach students how to train their ears.

General Music

I will soon receive a license from the state of Massachusetts enabling me to teach choral, instrumental, and general music grades K-12. I have taken extensive courses on most types of music pedagogy and I have three years of teaching experience interspersed with my college education. I am currently in the process of completing my music education practicum at an elementary and high school in Massachusetts.
