About Sibyl

I've taught fiction writing for 23 years at Tufts University and Emerson College. I have also taught in adult and community education settings, and have run private writing groups for adults, teens, and teens with Asperger's syndrome. I've won awards for my teaching and for my writing, and have published a writing textbook and have designed and taught an online writing course. I deeply enjoy helping writers to progress and to understand how language works.

I teach not only writing techniques but also the process of writing. I'm good at helping writers overcome blocks and learn to self-motivate. I take great joy in my students' achievements--some have even published. I've also worked professionally as an editor/proofreader, and have had great fun (believe it or not) teaching basic grammar and usage to adults.

Please feel free to contact me for more information or to schedule a meeting.

Elementary Education:
Vocabulary

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I've taught writing for 23 years at the college level. I have also worked professionally as a proofreader and editor. I have published a book on writing, designed and taught online and face-to-face writing courses, and won teaching awards.

Proofreading

I have worked as a proofreader at two university presses, including freelancing at Harvard University Press. I've also taught proofreading through Minuteman Regional High School's community education program.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary comes easily to me. Words interest me, and I often find myself looking them up out of curiosity. In college I enjoyed studying Latin and English usage, which added depth to my understanding of the words I use.

Writing

As a published writer, I have a good sense of how to use language. My writing ability has been honed in a graduate writing program and through my work as a writing teacher, editor, and proofreader. I love to teach writing and watching my students not only learning to write expressively but also gaining confidence as they progress.
