About Joseph

I have been teaching for over 20 years. I have taught in both Nicaragua and the United States. I have taught primarily at Catholic schools, at both the junior high and high school levels. I have also filled in as a substitute teacher in the local public schools. At present, I teach at a Catholic school in Vermont. I teach mathematics, English, and religion there. In the past I have also taught Latin, history, and science. I have excellent references and reasonable rates.

As far as the teaching of English is concerned, I stress the importance of learning grammar. Strong emphasis is placed on sentence diagramming. This is so because I have found it to be the best way to learn grammar. This, in turn, aids greatly in improving a student's writing skills. I think that frequent writing assignments, no matter how small, greatly aids in this process. Finally, I also highly recommend the reading of good literature. This helps broaden the mind as well expose a student to many different literary genres and writing styles.

In teaching mathematics, I have found that an incremental approach to topics (from basic to more complex material) to be best. Along with this, I have found that constant review, as well as frequent quizzes and tests, to be the best way to both learn as well as retain what they have learned. This believe this helps build knowledge, understanding, confidence, and self-esteem.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
