I have always loved the challenge and beauty of mathematics. Learning math and doing math could be a struggle at times, but the satisfaction of understanding a mathematical concept or solving a problem was always worth the effort. I have always loved the challenge and beauty of mathematics. Learning math and doing math could be a struggle at times, but the satisfaction of understanding a mathematical concept or solving a problem was always worth the effort. I was particularly inspired by my high school math teachers, and so I decided to go into teaching. I earned a bachelor's degree in both mathematics and English literature (another passion of mine) at Knox College, a small liberal arts college in Illinois. I then taught high school math for 8 years, and the courses I taught ranged from Pre-algebra to AP Calculus. I also coached "mathletes" who competed in math competitions. During the summer months I took graduate courses in education at Clarke College (now Clarke University) in Iowa and earned my master's degree.
After 8 years of teaching, an opportunity came up to work as an editor for a major educational publishing company based in Boston, and so I moved to Massachusetts. I have been here ever since, spending 33 years helping to create a wide range of high school math textbooks and digital lessons. Even though I was no longer interacting with students, my publishing career was rewarding because I knew that the instructional materials that I worked on would have an impact on hundreds of thousands of students. I have recently retired from publishing, and so now I'm going back to my "roots" by tutoring students.
I have spent my entire life learning and thinking about the best ways to teach mathematical ideas. Math education keeps evolving, and new approaches to teaching are constantly being tried and refined by teachers around the world. And math itself never ceases to surprise and delight me. I offer my wealth of experience with math and enthusiasm for it to anyone in need of tutoring.
