Framingan State University (English)
There is an abundance of tutors out there...so, how do you choose one? If any of the following factors match your criteria, I'd be happy to arrange an introductory meeting with you and get to know what your needs are from up-close. Remember, there is no one magic formula. Different students need and respond to different methods of preparation and stimuli. So, when you decide on a tutor, you may want to take into consideration the following.
I am a certified English teacher by the State of Massachusetts and I have been teaching English Grammar, Reading, Writing, TOEFL, IELTS, ECCE, ECPE, TOEIC, SAT (reading & writing) and GRE for over 15 years. My experience and forte' include teaching 5th & 6th graders, Middle, High School and College students and Adults and Business Professionals. My teaching experience is an international one...which means I am more likely to understand and meet your unique needs than most other tutors. Please note that I don't like to waste time. Once I am informed of what your goal is, I will make sure that the job gets done in the most cost and time efficient way. Apart from teaching the right answers, I make sure that I also teach you the bigger picture so you can develop self-reliant study techniques. This translates for you into less lessons and less money spent. As far as lessons are concerned, I provide conversational lessons for young students, college students and professional adults who happen to have come to the US recently and need to improve their overall English skills (this includes school work assistance). I provide practical and time-saver lessons on achieving the score that you want (or higher) for SAT (reading and writing), ACT (reading and writing), ISEE, GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, ECCE, ECPE & TOEIC. Furthermore, I provide lessons for assistance with literary analysis and creative writing for Middle, High School and College students. My lessons are time flexible. This means that lessons arrangements are made based on what you need, how long
and how often you need it. My lessons are also location flexible. This means that sessions can be held at your premises, mine (specially designed space), library or any other learning-conducive environment throughout Massachusetts (rates may need to be adjusted based on your location).
Regarding speaking, lack of speaking skills could be a nightmare and it is definitely an opportunity deterrent. It can freeze you from the inside and block you from pursuing what you truly desire and what you might be innately good at. It would be a shame. My approach to teaching speaking is 1st Psychological and 2nd Instructional. This means that in order to help one improve his/her speaking skills that person needs to feel comfortable with the sound of his/her own voice and with the fact being perfect isn't a requirement. This translates into .....self-confidence. Once the student has become acclimated and has dropped his/her inhibitions then we move to the second step which is teaching the specifics, including spoken paragraph and sentence structure, vocabulary and idioms, to name a few. This proves to be even more effective when it's combined and practiced while simulating realistic everyday situations (at the bank, supermarket, restaurant, etc). This translates into knowledge.
Feel free to contact me for any questions regarding your academic needs and your time frame. Please remember that I am not always available as I also teach in Europe and I have to travel back and forth throughout the year. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Specializing in EFL/ESL/ESOL instruction for over fifteen years with emphasis on accurate Grammar, Syntax and Pronunciation, I have worked and I am still working with multiple students from Europe, South America, Middle East and Asia.
First of all, I have grown in a bilingual environment of English and Greek (my father being an American and my mother Greek). In addition, I speak and write Greek fluently. Furthermore, I have the Greek GED diploma. Finally, apart from my 'vital statistics', I have taught conversational Greek and grammar to multiple ethnic backgrounds including British, German and of course American.
First of all, I possess extensive experience (over fifteen years) in working as an IELTS instructor both as a freelance instructor and as a private school teacher.
Secondly, most of the students (8 out of 10) that I have prepared for the IELTS did achieve the score they had set for themselves (usually ranging between 6.5 and 7.5).
Furthermore, I have greatly helped students (young and adult) with improving their writing skills relevant to the IELTS format (especially Task 1 since this type of writing deviates from the usual argumentative ones)
Finally, I am highly acquainted with the overall IELTS structure and this allows me to teach prospective exam takers that exam success has to also do with building exam techniques (in addition to language skills).
Similar to the SAT and ACT my contribution to students taking the ISEE exam is related to the English language sections, namely Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension and the Essay. Regardless of the level of the exam (based on the age of the student) my goal is to help students achieve maximum scores no matter what a school may require. On average, my students have achieved scores ranging from 6.5 to 7.5 in the last ten years.
Specializing for over fifteen years in TOEFL (120), IELTS (9.0), SAT (1600), GRE (340), ECCE & ECPE (100) (Michigan University Language Exams), TOEIC (990) (Test of English for International Communication), EFL/ESL Speaking & Writing.
